Maggie B. says:
I was shocked and appalled when I saw these posters hanging above the children’s shoe section in a FootAction store in Jensen Beach, FL this weekend.
In her book, Bad Boys, Ann Ferguson argues that while white boys are seen as naturally and innocently naughty, black boys are seen as willfully bad. This is possible because teachers attribute adult motivations to black, but not white, children. Ferguson calls this adultification. Essentially this means that many teachers and other school authorities see black boys as “criminals” instead of kids. And black girls–also adultified, but differently–are seen as dangerously sexual. Adults, of course, are held 100% responsible for their behavior. There is no leeway here, no second chances, and no benefit of the doubt.
These pictures do more than just sexualize the young children pictured (who appear to be black and mixed-race), they also adultify them with their expressions, postures, fashion, and implied contexts.

What sort of parent allows thier child to be exploited like this? If parents refused to allow thier kids to be used in such advertising, and parents refused to buy from stores/manufacturers using this type of advertising, this would be a non-issue.
There is nothing CUTE about this, at all.

Disgusting.

Getting more and more common, I guess.
Check out Marc Jacobs's last campaign for kids fashion, for instance. Not as naughty as the above examples, but shares a similar "adultification" approach (with sulky "cool" expressions and all...).

there are more horrible things in this world than pictures like these hanging in stores. stores advertise whats popular and obviously this is what they saw as popular. i'm sure the little kids on these posters arent the same kids that are out stealing, doing/selling drugs, and hurting people. and i'm sure these pictures arent whats making kids in society today do the bad things they do. its the parents who don't "parent" their children. letting their kids do a photoshoot such as this one, isnt the end of the world. go to a website where parents abuse their children and comment on that!

why is everything about color?? i work at a footaction and the only reason why these children look like this is because footaction is an "urban" store.. this is what people that shop at this store look like. the pictures are supposed t look like jay-z beyonce, diddy, and lil jon. people that come in the store tell me how cute the signs are. i personally wouldnt let my children ever model in pictures where it makes them look like theyre 30, but it gets on my nerves when people try to bring color into anything.
