Tiffani W. at Peppermint Kiss sent in a great example of the social construction of gender and the devaluation of all things feminine, a comic on why men insist on peeing standing up was posted at The Oatmeal. The uptake:
Women sit down to pee. Women are sissy bitches. Therefore, sitting down to pee makes you a “sissy bitch.” If that second sentence weren’t there, the joke wouldn’t make any sense.
Not only do people think that it is girly (yuck!) to sit down and pee, they also think that it is natural that men stand. However, this is learned behavior. While peeing is biological, where and how we pee are cultural and imbued with meaning.
Whether you sit or stand depends on where you are in the world. I have personally witnessed women standing to pee in Ghana, and they did not make the mess that I, without any practice, would make. Enough Ghanaian women stand to pee for this sign to make sense (link):
Ignoring the fact that some women in other areas of the world stand to pee, many westerners claim–because they assume we are more civilized–that men evolved to stand while women evolved to sit. They think it is natural.
However, it may really be natural to squat. There is speculation that many of the ancient toilets that we assume people sat on were actually squat toilets. We may have actually squatted throughout much of history. If you have ever spent time around small children, you know they instinctually squat before we teach them to sit or stand. Furthermore, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends teaching a young boy to sit first. When you really, really, really want a young boy to just use the toilet instead of a diaper, the last thing you want to do is make it confusing by trying to teach him that sometimes you sit and sometimes you stand.
But many parents will go to a lot of trouble to teach gender even though it might cause them more trouble and a messy bathroom, hence the existence of tinkle targets and potty-training urinals like the one shown here, which promises to give your son a “real ‘stand up’ experience”:
On the other hand, in line with our greater comfort with women adopting masculine behaviors than men adopting feminine ones, a quick Google search yields a plethora of sites teaching women how to stand while peeing. And if you just can’t master it, well then there is a product for that.
So even something as seemingly “natural” as peeing varies culturally and illustrates our insistence in the U.S. on emphasizing gender difference and placing gender-segregated practices in a hierarchy that values masculine traits over feminine ones — even ones that are as mundane as how we pee.

I've always been led to believe that us Muslims always sit down to pee, regardless of gender.

them apart from women. But only in the KJV.

having read quite a bit of The Oatmeal, i'm fairly confident that the comic you featured is attempting, using sarcasm, to make exactly the point your post does. i'm disappointed that your post (and the reader who submitted the comic) implies that the comic is serious in its misogyny and the double-standard it presents.

It's funny because I talked about this issue today with my cousin who has a 5 year old boy.
I saw him peeing standing up in the garden and I asked if he peed this way all the time, or if he sometimes peed sitting (I have no children, no brother, so I didn't have a clue).
My cousin was shoked and said "of course he stands up, he's a boy !", as if it was obvious...
I remember very well that my ex (who is Saudi) used to sit... And telling this to people here (we are a franco-bulgarian family) seems like saying he used to walk on his hands! Crazy...

The only thing in this post that "illustrates our insistence in the US [only in the US?] on emphasizing gender differences" is the sarcastic comic at the beginning. I am skeptical that this is really an issue.
While how someone pees could possibly be cultural (but probably not "imbued with meaning"), this post seems to imply that people actually care whether other people pee standing up or sitting down. It could be that I am unique in not having come into contact with such people. Do they really exist? When would they have the opportunity to even criticize this? I can sort of imagine there might be women telling men they should be sitting down, I don't actually know any, but it's very hard to imagine men telling other men to pee standing up.

Isn't there a campaign to pee in the shower? Let's just go with that.

This is a great article, but I wanted to mention that I think it does a bit of a disservice to the Go Girl product. It's really not marketed as making women's urination more socially acceptable by standing up. I have one and, as it says on the front page of their site, it's great for active women who don't want to either have to find a bathroom or accidentally pee on their feet while squatting.

Greetings, away from all the posts before me, I had learned the value of sitting and urining as a man. According to the Islamic doctrine sitting allows you to be free from splattering urine all over you. Also, by sitting you are allowed to relieve your kidneys of its waste to a greater degree than standing. Lastly the mindset of being targeted as a sissy is something you will have to make a decision about. Personally the people who know me understand that there is a penalty for calling me out of my name. Thank you!

quite tempting to attribute this error to the gender of the caricaturist, but let's stick to IQ...

I don't care what people do, except other women who somehow squat and...end up peeing on public toilet seats. I think they're afraid their skin will come in contact with the seat, but I do not enjoy sitting in your urine. Please stop.

Odd thing: my five-year-old son has finally caved to using the toilet over this last summer, but he only did so when he was taught to pee standing up.
I'm not sure what this says, but teaching him to pee sitting down didn't work at all.
Gilbert Pinfold — August 23, 2011
actually, there is something to the 'natural' argument. Whether its natural or not, men of a certain age have less difficulty achieving a good stream of pee standing up. This is due to enlarged prostates and sundry fatty bits compressing the baldder/tubes in the sitting position. Perhaps there is a urologist or MD that could comment on this.

I've been really shocked to learn that many women are unaware that it is even possible for men to sit while urinating. I guess it just goes to show how well society hides the behavior. Has anyone else encountered this?
If I couldn't pee sitting down, that would make going #2 pretty difficult. Not to mention that peeing standing up at 5:00 in the morning is near impossible.
Fox — August 24, 2011
You can not imagine my shock, as a wide-eyed 20-year old, getting off a plane at Nagoya Airport and going to use the public restroom and discovering that most of the stalls were "traditional" style toilets (basically a trough you're supposed to squat over... out of gleaming porcelain and with full plumbing!) with a few "Western style" ones at the end. No idea why no one thought to mention the toilet situation in Asia before I went (it was study abroad through school), but I had honestly never even considered the possibility that there was some alternative to the Western toilet/style of peeing. The sight of such a "primitive" concept (squatting over a hole) executed in a fully modern manner was nothing short of bewildering.
Later in the semester, there was an article in the local paper extolling the virtues of the "traditional" toilet and bemoaning the increase in Western-style, with a list of reasons why "traditional" was vastly superior (including things like "you spend most of the day sitting! Why sit in the bathroom too!" and "squatting strengthens your leg muscles!" and, most concerning, "sitting gives you hemorrhoids!"). We - the American & European exchange students - thought it was the most ridiculous/hilarious thing ever. Looking back, I find my unquestioned assumption of western superiority rather embarrassing. Since then, I've been much more aware of the fact that "sitting when you pee" really isn't considered the "natural"/traditional way of doing things everywhere.. (Japan challenged a lot of my other Western/American assumptions; I never could adjust to the idea of washing everything - clothes, dishes, hands - in COLD water and calling it clean...)

The reverse: I'm a woman who, having spent a lot of time in places without Western-style toilets, learned to pee standing up. I teach study abroad, and my female American students are horrified that I can do this. So, men who pee sitting down are "sissy bitches" while women who pee standing up are 'uncivilized,' 'trannies' (in a bad way), or 'butches' (also in a bad way). In other words, men devalue the way that women pee, but women also devalue the way that men pee when they see their peers doing it. My students view me as having been poorly socialized to my gender role because I am acting outside of it, or they see me as unsocialized ('uncivilized') because I act outside of it.
While I concur that the Oatmeal comic straddles the line between satirizing the situation and satirizing the oppressed (as amanda crow mentions below), I think that you could print the reverse of this comic. Western women often bemoan men's inability to aim (among other things), and women who pee standing up in the West are seen as not quite feminine. This is about -gendering- going both ways.

I give my 70-year-old dad +500 points for sitting down to pee. Before he married my mom 45 years ago, her uncle told Dad about the time he had to clean the toilet when his wife was sick, and so ever after sat down. My dad, being the nice guy he is, decided this was only fair and to this day still tries to convince his male friends they should be doing the same...

"However, it may really be natural to squat. There is speculation that
many of the ancient toilets that we assume people sat on were actually
squat toilets. We may have actually squatted throughout much of history."
Important to note that a huge chunk (maybe even a majority?) of the world's population squats to pee and defecate even now. I mean, all of India, China, Malaysia, Nepal, and most other Asian countries. Squat toilets are still found in Peru, Russia, Greece, the list goes on and on.
So, it's not a purely historical thing - it is really just us Westerners who do the sitting thing. Most people still squat.

My boyfriend is well over 6 feet tall, and always sits down to pee. It's the only way to avoid making a huge mess. I admit to thinking it was weird at first, but the more I thought about, the stranger my own assumptions seemed that men "should" stand up to pee.
Abs — August 27, 2011
Is this a serious article? I can't work it out. Does it REALLY matter how men and women urinate? Some guys stand up, some sit down, it's up to them. Why are women concerned by this?
Anatomybuff — August 28, 2011
Standing is better for urination, squatting is better for defecation. Sitting in no way advantages you for either act. Sitting in either act of defecation or urination for either gender is disadvantageous.

As a man, the real reason I pee standing up is it's convenient. Walk in, zip pee zip done. That and when you sit down to pee your penis dangles down and occasionally brushes against the side of the toilet bowl, not something I find particularly enjoyable.
The whole being girly part? It's something that women almost exclusively do (at least in our culture), it would be a joke, nothing serious and no one would actually care if a guy did it, he'd get flaked a little but all in good fun. I remember during highschool we were always joking about this sort of thing, it's part of growing up and "becoming a man". It's hardwired into our brain to try to assert our masculinity and in doing so we label a lot of things as "tough man things" (American football, wrestling, boxing, sports in general, weight lifting, and other potentially dangerous or difficult activities that show physical strength/prowess). The byproduct of that is a lot of things getting labeled as sissy or girly or unmanly. I don't think it's something women will ever really understand, though they might think they do.
And a note clear things up: When guys need to poop and pee we just do both sitting down, and when you're pooping you almost invariably empty your bladder at the same time so it happens a lot. I don't mind it but I don't particularly enjoy it, especially in public restrooms when god knows what touched the side of the bowl/lip of the lid which I often accidentally brush my penis against.
Sexist standing urinator — August 28, 2011
What a load of old rubbish. Who care's how one goes to the toilet, the first image was a bit of light hearted humour that you took to your feminist heart as an attack on yourself being a "sissy." The fact that you feel to make a social comment that both men and women are entitled to pass urine as they like is beyond me. I don't mind how people empty their bladders, I would assume that both sexes do what they presume will make the least amount of mess.

Isn't it rediculous how we make such a huge deal out of something so small and common? I would ask a person who uses catheters if they care how a person situates...doubtful.
Yourefuckingdumb — July 25, 2012
Standing to pee as a man is not a culturally learned thing. It's a natural thing that men did in the wild before we shit in holes. If you let him, the average man would piss in his backyard, too.
Ali — August 24, 2012
What a topic you folks are discussing about, "sit or stand and pee"! So let me tell you some thing then, not bad if you know that in my culture the male people avoid peeing while standing! In my country it's so, as my religion has recommended not to pee while standing, and to do it while sitting or squatting. I know there, they teach the kid when he can stand up, how to pee while standing, but it's not so here. However, I am a man and quite healthy, but I don't pee while standing. You should consider that there are many different ways and theologies around the world.
To my own, peeing while standing is nasty, also it does not feet a man's character, that's like you imagine a respectable man standing up still some where, his penis is out and his pee flow in front of him! Who made the rule that males MUST stand up while urinating? And don't relate it to the nature, potentially many things are natural as an ability; one can bring it out (gun), aim and kill, but he has choosing power, although he has the ability, but he may not do it if he is sane; one can just bring it out, aim and piss, but does it mean he can not do it in a way but that?
Why stand to pee? Why aim? Aiming is for the time when you are distant to your target and can't be close to it, but when you can be close to it, and if you are sane, you prefer being close to your target than aiming to the target. So sit down and be relax, the name of the place you are doing that in, is rest room! And why you waste your time and energy in cleaning bathrooms? You can save it for more useful affairs by reducing the need of bathroom to be cleaned!
As for those who say "peeing while standing is of a few pleasures of a man!", I should say that a man is more valuable than way of peeing places as his pleasure and property! It does not fit a man to consider that as his worth! Men have more valuable special abilities to be mentioned! And as for those who say "peeing while standing is much easier than doing it while sitting or squatting", I should say that bending over and pulling down pants, and keeping a part of panties down for a while and aim for a while both need an attempt; and the fact that which one is easier for a person depends on habit. The way in which one's habit is based on, is easier for that one, and to which you habit, it will be easier for you! As God has made the ability of peeing while standing easily in guys, it must have an advantage, and yes it has. In men's jobs some times urgent situations happen, and some times they have to do some thing in a short time when the speed is important, and some times men have situations that they can't sit or squat or are in places where sitting or squatting is not easily possible; in such times they can use their ability of peeing while standing easily. But these urgent times just some times happen, not always! So I think there should be a project for men to stop, or to say better, manage peeing while standing. One group are already doing that and their site is: http://www.mapsu.org . As I mentioned, there are some occations when it's needed to pee standing up, then it happens for both men and women! So what should women do? So easy, they can instantly pee standing up using a small device, one is here: http://www.travelmateinfo.com/page002.html .
However, it will be great if the current way of peeing of guys in toilets and bathrooms, in the most parts of the world changes.

I am totally catheter-dependent and find it much easier to drain my bladder when I am sitting down. Draining a large bladder takes time, so I sit down 99% of the time.
