Lynne S. clipped this coupon for a “lovers special” at Cassano’s Pizza. Notice it both presumes heterosexuality and genders meat as masculine and veggies as feminine.
We saw the same gendering of food in the Brick House Tavern Menu, TV dinner categories, and a vintage Campbell’s soup ad.

I'm a vegetarian and my wife isn't. I can't tell you how many times, when we have gone out to eat together, the vegetarian dish was placed in front of her and the non-vegetarian one in front of me.

My husband used to be very much a meat-eater while I was more of a vegetable eater. However, he's the one that first said, "I want to go vegan." I happily agreed to do it with him, but I am still sort of shocked by it so I can see how those close to us would be shocked and think that I somehow convinced him to do it (as they've all assumed). However, that alone doesn't explain why complete strangers seem to think it was my doing, so there's definitely something cultural. And people definitely seem more surprised to meet a male vegan than a female one.
He still eats a fairly "masculine" looking diet, though. He hasn't quite worked up to stuff like salad and is more into things like vegetarian "chicken". But he gets a bit ticked if he sees that cooks have skimped on the broccoli, which happens for him a lot more than me.
He also loves stopping at rest stops, taking out his big pocket knife, and using it to peel and eat a grapefruit in the food court. He likes the stares he gets.

It reminds me of the times I went out with my (former) BF- I ordered an alcoholic beverage but he didn't, and yet many many times the drink was places at his place and not mine, apparently assuming that if only 1 drink is ordered by a heterosexual couple, it must have been ordered by the male.

the "HIS" and "HERS" seems soooooo unnecessary. they just felt they need to be assholes i guess? that feels like a slap in the face.

Sadly, this deal would be perfect for my fiance and myself, and yes, he is the meat-eater.
We used to get something similar when ordering coffee, though, back when I drank coffee. He'd always get hot chocolates... and it was usually assumed that these were for me.

What about the assumption that lovers must be het couples?

This amuses me as the father of one of my friends runs a pizzeria, and he told me that usually it's the guys who order veggies and the girls who order meat lovers.

Woot. Thank you for posting this Lisa. There’s a lot of good thought provoking comments too. So, adding my own... why is it that homosexual couples are essentially nonexistent for Valentine’s Day? I can’t think of one item/ad/food product/card/decoration/etc that was targeted for homosexual couples, or even non heterosexual specific. (I didn’t watch any LBGT oriented TV. I’m assuming they had some, but I didn’t see any geared towards the “general” audience.) If it’s money that drives advertising, you’d think they’d want to include that other 10+% of the population, you know?

Ugh. As a meat-loving woman, I seriously gritted my teeth when I saw this shit.
