The Women’s Media Center has compiled a series of clips exposing the racist and sexist discourse surrounding Sotomayor’s nomination to the Supreme Court:
Lisa Wade is a professor of sociology at Occidental College. You can follow her on Twitter and Facebook.
Scared white men! Run for your lives, the scared white men are coming after us!
She's the Affirmative Action candidate! (Read: she was picked ONLY because of her ethnicity). Ignore the fact that she was 2nd in her Princeton class.
For all of those who despise Affirmative Action because they really don't get what it is about, consider that Judge Sotomayor was a beneficiary of Affirmative Action, had some doors open for her, and took off from there. Affirmative Action might help you get into a school, but it does not give you As. It does not guarantee you’ll graduate. Affirmative Action might give you an edge in getting a job, but it does not guarantee you’ll be any good or succeed. All it does is open a door that otherwise would not be open to you. You do all the work yourself.
She is a shining example of the success and promise of Affirmative Action. People should have used her to promote AA instead of using the her success as a way to demean the program.
