What Americans say the need (from Pew via Felix Salmon)
88% need a car? Take that New Urbanists! What’s more telling about this poll is the decline across the board in the number of people who report “needing things.” Although, C’mon only 8% of you say you need your Flat Screen TV’s! Only 4% need Ipods! Where are our priorities!

Between Hulu and VOIP, a home PC with broadband can substitute for 5-6 other "necessities."

I don't mean to nitpick @Pew but the sampling frame seems a bit off. "A total of 752 interviews were completed with respondents contacted
by landline phone and 251 with those contacted on their cell phone." So, about 75% of the sample were contacted on landlines, although cellphone penetration in the US is 75%.
