Margaret McE. sent in an image of Gro-Shu kids’ shoes (found at Hoyden About Town), which are sold at Payless Shoes in Australia. They’re a great example of the gendering of products: notice that the boys’ shoe is called Maths and the girls’ is Drama.
I mean, really?

Because we all know that boys can't do drama, and girls can't do math. I think my drama teacher would have had a fit if someone turned up in those impractical monstrosities- they're open, and clearly not built for any real sort of use.

Is it wrong that this made me laugh?

Although it's doubly sad that maths is unmistakably academic whereas when I saw Drama my mind first leapt to personal drama.

Yeah, Josh--I had the same reaction. I think that's probably on purpose. Girls like drama. And girls ARE drama! Hah!
So funny.

This is shooting fish in a barrel. It's not shocking to go into a super-mainstream store (Target, Joann's, Payless) and find super-mainstream gendering of products, is it? But you *can* avoid such stores and buy more interesting products, or you can shop at Target, Joann's, Payless and buy against the gendering (go ahead, buy your daughter the Maths shoes, the cashier will take your money all the same, I guarantee it).
And my first reaction was: $59 kids shoes at Payless?!?!? I wouldn't look at those long enough to notice the model names.

Are you sure that the shoe on the left is a boy's shoe? They could both be girls' models, and the "plainer" one is "maths", which isn't gendering, but is a whole new mess...

Or you could just buy another brand's shoes from Payless:

Yeah, they both look like girl's shoes to me. All they are saying is that maths is a more practical/boring subject than drama.

@Penny "And my first reaction was: $59 kids shoes at Payless?!?!? I wouldn’t look at those long enough to notice the model names."
That's in AUD, which are usually worth between 60 and 70% of USD. If they're leather, which they look like, though you can't actually tell from the website, that's quite reasonable, IM (Aussie)O.

Has anyone thought about digging a trench and adding some garden compost, before planting out vegtable seedlings, such as carrots, and onions.
Secondly, if you stew some apples and pears in boiling water and sugar this will make a suitable filing for crumbles.

those are both for girls, you´re reading too much into it.
Kelly — October 28, 2009
If those are both girls' shoes, why does Maths go to a higher size? Drama goes to a 5, which several sizes into the usual women's range, Maths ends where the men's range usually begins.

The website actually says that "Maths" is a unisex shoe- http://www.paylessshoes.com.au/showcase/groshu
This is because lots of schools have regulations against wearing the mary-jane style shoes, particularly private schools.
Kelly Holden — January 1, 2010
They weren't explicitly gender labelled when this post was made, or it wouldn't have been much of a post. But still, the maths shoe is for boys, just not exclusively, while the drama is exclusively for girls.
