So it turns out there’s this company that makes “zombie” targets for gun enthusiasts. They have clown zombies, nazi zombies, “terrorist” zombies, dog zombies and even a green zombie named “Rocky” that has Barack Obama’s ears.
And one woman.
Here’s their explanation:
The Zombie virus does not discriminate and neither does Zombie Industries. We take preparation for the Zombie Apocalypse seriously, which is why we strive to have all groups of undead monsters represented in our product selection. In addition to the Ex Girlfriend Zombie, we currently sell 15 male zombies, 5 animal zombies & 2 aliens… to discriminate against Women by not having them represented in our product selection would be just plain sexist.
Each of the zombie targets has a story. Here is the story of “The Ex”:
Be warned, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned but a man scorned is nothing to mess with! A young gent from Louisiana, we’ll call him André to protect his identity, was deeply committed to his one true love and her to him, or so he thought. While partying with her friends during one particular Mardi Gras, she took several suitors over the course of the festivities. André felt something odd indeed, so he paid a visit to his great aunt, Marie, who helped him see the truth. With a few eggs, candles lit and kiss upon his forehead, her voodoo curse was set in motion. Late each night while lying in bed, a smile would appear across his face, for a slight breeze would travel through a cracked window bringing with it, a faint whiff of decay and a unnatural cry of regret.
That’s right. In this narrative, a man kills a woman for cheating on him, and has her turned into a zombie. Which you, bro, are now invited to blow to bits.
Despite the game-like zombie theme, it is notable that the single human female representation has been created specifically as a target of violent male anger towards a woman’s ownership of her own sexuality. And “The Ex” is portrayed in a highly sexual way, with what seems to be a bare lower torso and busting out chest.
Policymic writes, “Every day, at least three women are killed by an intimate partner in the US alone. Let’s make sure those numbers go down, not up. Let’s make sure companies like Zombies Industries know that we’re not buying it.”
Some people, however, are buying it. And this is what’s most troubling.
From the product reviews:
This Zombie Bitch is awesome, reminds me of a girl I knew in High School, My LMT LM308MWS should put a stop to the undead bring them on !!! Later Party till you drop Corvette forever !!!!!
And:
I love that this target looks like Britney Spears and it bleeds when I shot it.

At least the zombie still has her head on, unlike the bonus statue shipped with the deluxe box of the "Dead Island: Riptide" videogame.
(Yes, there was an online outrage. They still shipped the torso statues)

"to discriminate against Women by not having them represented in our product selection would be just plain sexist."
Yes that is about the point in time I'd be punching him.

The back story has been changed to make the female a villain and her name has been changed.
"Alexa was from Louisiana and was always drawn to the occult. She had a wicked mean streak in her and was known for her nasty disposition, especially if she had been drinking. She also happened to be in love with a young man, but there was a slight problem.. he was married to another women. When he told her that he loved his wife and could never be unfaithful to her, Alexa became enraged. She decided to seek the help of a local tarot card & palm reader who also dabbled in Voodoo. When she told the Voodoo Witch of her plan to break up a loving a marriage.. the witch refused to help her. That’s when Alexa lost her cool for the last time and crossed the wrong person. She let out a slew of insults directed at the witch and told her she would get her way one way or another. That’s when the Voodoo Witch cast a spell of her own. Alexa never knew what hit her and before she reached her home that evening she joined the ranks of the Undead!"

The stories for their male zombies sound like mostly similarly dislikable people, and fitting into similar standard horror tropes.
Their torsos fit into a similar level of attractiveness and increased nudity, but their faces are much more disfigured and ugly.

Hahahahahaha this is HILARIOUS! And I'm a woman. It's almost always the really unattractive women who get pissed off at this sort of thing.

What, no mention of the patriarchal notion that women are specifically less suitable than men as targets for violence? Isn't that the reason why they don't already market female 'generic civilian' types?

cheating on your husband is 'ownership over your own sexuality"? What if you don't cheat?
and a man angry at his wife cheating on him is not necessarily a misogynist.

I don't see the problem with it.

The zombie meme in pop culture has become a kind of zombie itself (it just won't freakin' die). I guess that's because making a character a "zombie" has become a cheap'n'easy way to violate social taboos that involve inflicting violence and mutilation (and misogyny involving violence and mutilation) on an individual or group without suffering any legal or social repercussions because hey, the "victims" were zombies and it's ok to do ANYthing to a blatant surrogate for a given class of people I don't like so long as they're undead (the ultimate form of dehumanization, apparently).
Instead of the "zombie apocalypse," I'm still hoping for a "douchebag apocalypse" because we're about at the point where nobody will care what someone does to those who portray others as zombies just so they can mutilate and/or kill them with impunity. Zombies as portrayed in modern pop culture sure seem like they've become nothing more than extremely unflattering effigies created for no other reason than to be destroyed.
It'd be fun to watch the responses that would be generated by having effigies of guys ignoring them to play Xbox or download porn sold as targets for frustrated women right alongside the "zombie ex-gf" targets. If it had a cut-offable penis too then I bet it'd mute their expressions of spite as it sent a collective shudder of apprehension through the ranks of the douchebags who are high-fiving each other and laughing about blasting their zombie ex girlfriend effigies.
The real "zombis" and the process of zombification (like what used to happen to people who did very bad things in Haiti back in the day) is a fascinating study in social norms, the consequences of violating taboos, and cultural ideas about justice and punishment that is far more interesting than Hollywood's rather redundant take on the phenomenon ever could be (at least IMO). All it takes is some puffer fish toxin and some datura and anyone can make their own zombi, more or less.

I know it's a small quibble, Tom, but perhaps you could consider not letting a YouTube comment get the last word, as though it were a definitive sample of the vox populi,
I mean, virtually every internet user already knows that you can find some of the most abusive, crude, and brainless quotes imaginable in the comments for a cute puppy video. But it wouldn't be exactly fair to nutpick one of those to characterize people who like puppies.

To make this target look a lot less controversial and seem almost quaint, all you have to do is contrast it with the targets designed to help train shooters to overcome their natural inhibition against shooting children and pregnant women (in a nursery no less!).
They're from the "No More hesitation" series proudly brought to you by Law Enforcement Targets, Inc. They're not blood-oozing mannequins, but they are actual printed photos so are very realistic. The little boy you're supposed to shoot is even smiling, probably because he's about to exact revenge on the cop for shooting his mom while she was pregnant with his sister.

And everything is all fine and pretty with gun-toting women shooting up the 15 male targets? Sorry but there is a down-side to women's suffrage. Just as when you get more women CEOs you should also have more women in prison. And let not forget that women have lobbied successfully mind you for the right to actually be in combat in the military as well.

So shooting random dudes and Obama is kosher, but shooting a zombified woman misogyny?
How?

So should the Grand Theft Auto video game franchise recall all of its products until all female characters/representations have been removed from the game?
Why no outrage over the company making 15 male zombie targets?
Should the estate of Jimi Hendrix recall his iTunes material to make sure "Hey Joe" is nowhere to be found?
Geez people, get off the drugs. It's not normal to experience this much outrage over the mundane...

But all the other thousands of male targets are still ok? You manginas are pathetic.
