i just saw an ad for contacts that conflated "confidence" with "not wearing glasses". then i saw this! i mean, i don't have a problem with contacts or lasik, but can't they advertise them as "you will see better without glasses" instead of pretending you are somehow harnessing your potential better?

To me, this is just another example about how women can "empower" themselves by adhering to specific cosmetic regimes. I'm probably going to need glasses/contacts soon, but when I realized what contacts cost (not to mention the fact that ANYTHING touching or near my eyes: makeup, dust, etc causes irritation), I made the decision that when the time comes, it's going to be glasses... and I'm going to be just as assertive with them as without.

I'm a glasses-wearer who wishes I could have lasik surgery, and I'm a little confused about why so many people in this thread consider lasik a cosmetic procedure or an example of conspicuous consumption. It seems like a highly practical/quality of life procedure to me.
