Some of you may have heard about the anti-Muslim protest outside a charity event in Orange County on February 13th. A local chapter of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) Relief, a Muslim charity organization that raises money for women’s shelters, food pantries, disaster relief, and other humanitarian work, sponsored a fundraiser at the Yorba Linda Community Center.
Chrissy Y. sent in a video of the protest. It includes chants of “Go back home!”, “USA!”, and “terrorist!” amid loud boos as individuals walked into the center. At around 3:10 a woman accuses a man of beating his wife and being a child molester. Between the conflation of Muslim with being inherently un-American, the conflation of all Muslims with terrorists, and the reliance on the stereotype of Muslim men as brutal oppressors of victimized women, it is an ugly, ugly example of anti-Muslim sentiment:

Dreadfully frightening

This is horrible. I really have no words.

I'm all for quarantining Orange County so that their hatred and stupidity doesn't spread. Disneyland isn't worth it.
Jeanette — March 4, 2011
Ugh. Shit like this is why I moved out of Orange County.

This is so, so awful to watch. An awful itself.
m — March 4, 2011
Oh my god, they are screaming that at children! Honestly, looking at this I can only think of neo nazis and militant nationalists.
Liz — March 4, 2011
There are not enough American Flags in that protest. [/sarcasm]
Anyway, that's disgusting.
Jacob — March 4, 2011
To have a fuller picture, it should be pointed out that the ICNA has been (rightfully? wrongfully?) accused of funneling funds to terrorists in Pakistan, and its written materials call for Sharia law and the establishment of a global Islamic Caliphate (http://www.investigativeproject.org/2373/hand-book-shows-icna-true-goals) -- most likely the reasons the protest was organized.
That said, any legitimate concerns regarding the ICNA are not being voiced here -- it's all about xenophobic bigots screaming and harassing their Muslim neighbors, including children. It's a disgusting display.
Jihad-Punk — March 4, 2011
Shit like this makes me angry. And I'm glad there's this video. For all these bigots who claim Islamophobia does not exist and that they can't be "racist" against Muslims because Muslims aren't a "race." It's still prejudice, bigotry, intolerance, and pure hatred, period.

Hey Gwen, could we maybe have a trigger warning next time?

This is the goal of this organization in their own words:
“To seek the pleasure of Allah (SWT) through the struggle for
establishing the Islamic system of life as spelled out in the Qur’an
and the Sunnah of the Prophet Mohammad (S)”
Uh yeah, I think I will stand proudly with the ugly bigots supporting the Constitution of the United States, thanks.

How can you both be a non-American and a traitor to America? (about 5:05)

This video makes me cry with saddness and anger that people could be so hate filled. When did people stop being able to debate opinions and talk rationally about our differences, and resort first and only to horrendous abuse, racial slurs and fear mongering.....what a broken world we live in.....I hope I never live in the states.

This is painful to watch. Ignorance leads to hatred and extremism. These protestors have no concept of rational thought. I pity them.

If the 2012 elections get this heated, we’re going to have lots and lots of riots. Personally, I’m looking forward to the Republican primary; if Palin wins the nomination she’ll probably make the most fun speeches since Dan Quayle.

Orange County is extremely conservative and a hotbed of white nationalism (and I mean that literally, there are a lot of overtly white nationalist organizations based there).
Over the past few years there have been several anti-illegal immigration protests in the OC that were very similar to the one above in terms of rhetoric and intensity, except aimed at Latinos instead of Muslims.
The interesting thing is that the county is undergoing demographic changes. The county is now about a third Latino, most of whom are concentrated in the northern part abutting LA county, and Asian population is also growing strongly. As these demographic changes have accelerated, the far-right in the region has become much more vocal.

I have never been so disgusted in my life. I feel sick knowing I share a country with people like that. And toward the end, they were just yelling slogans with no meaning. It wasn't about asserting an opinion or public expression, it was a mass of hate and ingnorance. They were the terrorist. Standing there, yelling and screaming the most hateful things they could think of in order to inspire fear. I am so ashamed.
Syd — March 4, 2011
This is disgusting. They were advocating for the murder of innocent people, many of whom are American citizens, about half of whom are LITTLE CHILDREN, for what? Trying to do exactly what many good-intentioned Christian Churches do, but instead under a religion with the same god, but somewhat less Jesus.
I'm pretty damn sure the Constitution does not say 'go out and kill Muslim babies.' Just saying.

The level of hate and ignorance in this video made me want to vomit. It was easily the most appalling thing I've watched in a long, long time.

As has been typical in anti-Muslim rhetoric in recent history, the issue of gender inequality is used to spark further support against Muslim groups. This political strategy is seen not only in discriminatory protests like the one shown here, but also in mainstream media, and coming from more prominent politicians than those profiled here. There is no denying that systemic and extensive gender discrimination exists in some Muslim contexts. However, U.S. foreign policy has NEVER been made with the true intention of altering women's/girls' rights for the better across the Arab world. The media and politicians just frame our political approaches in that way.
As the article cited, below, so effectively points out, U.S. foreign policy makers were keenly aware that the Taliban was horrifically sexist when we supported them so that they could fight our fight against the Soviets a few decades ago. But for the U.S., our access to oil outweighed global gender equity, so we bankrolled an extremist organization that we now fear. Thus, when these protestors incessantly scream how violent Muslims are against women, they not only perpetuate stereotypes and ignore America's own sexist tendencies. They also further erase a disturbing aspect of American history, in which our key policy makers were central in supporting gender violence.

I live in orange county and it was shocking when I heard about this. If you live in america, you ARE american. Period. Who was the first person who thought 'Oh I know what to do, let's go to a battered womens center and mentally batter some women and children. That will show them.'
There are many plans for upcoming protests.. students from my own university, other colleges, political and religious organizations are banding together for a Love Rally to show that we do not agree with the debasement of people because they practice Islam or any other religion, or belong to any culture. Some ideas have been a silent protest, a counter-protest at the next 'hate rally', and setting up a bbq in front of the ICNA center, to have an all-american bbq with our fellow americans!
I just wanted to post here to show that people in orange county, regardless of race or creed, are coming together and trying to take a stand, because we all know that what happened during that hate rally was wrong. Some of my friends have said 'why do you care so much? you are not muslim'. It is this mentality, the ideas of 'us' and 'them' that breed disunity in our country. My response? I care because I know in my heart that it is wrong to verbally abuse innocent men, women and children. I care because I know that beyond this one hate rally, people are discriminated against in their daily lives in more or less subtle ways. I think that anyone who complains that they don't agree with the current state of society should do everything they can to change it.

i find it amusing that one of the reasons that they're so pissed at the muslims is because they believe that muslim men abuse and batter women. but notice how the women speaker only describes her daughter as beautiful. she goes into more detail about her son, and his job in the marines.i could be wrong but i was under the impression that the marines and other armed forces are considered strictly male territory and that women who enter have a high risk of being abused sexually by thier male peers. if any of the muslim women they were screaming thier brains out at was being abused by thier husband, she now knows that she cannot turn to american women for support, the same women whose great grandmothers fought hard againts opposition so that they would have the rights that many muslim women may not have. and in the bible, the book that this "great country" was built on doesnt offer alot for women either....
Samiam — May 22, 2011
Yes, me too. I found this video pretty offensive. I'm a Republican. I'm a Christian. I'm an American patriot. And while I don't support the subjugation of women that most Muslims engage in, I don't think they beat their wives or do perverted things with their kids, no more than trashy redneck white people do, and probably less. How awful for people to say that to those poor children.
If you read about the connections between American mosques and Al-Qaeda, they did exist and may still. There have been many credible studies of support for terrorist activites in mosques in Germany. Additionally, in England, surveillance of mosques has led to the thwarting of acts of terror. So, to say there is no connection, is not true. However, in England, it was Muslims who helped uncover and share with the authorities intelligence on these terrorists. And, if you were a psycho terrorist, you have nothing in common with the average Muslim.
Most people are peaceful, and most people of faith, no matter what faith are working towards similar goals. And, if you are a hellbent awful person, you can find as much demented inspiration in the bible as in the koran. Psycho Sociopaths are everywhere. Notable though is the fact that the majority of terrorists come from Muslim nations and look to their religion for inspiration to perform unimaginable destruction against innocent civilians.
Samiam — May 22, 2011
I must add that most of the psychos are coming from Muslim nations and are of a particular demented version of the Muslim faith ...now, (there are some American born jihadists, some of them white even) Earlier in the last century, they came from places like Germany and Japan. Bad people are bad, no matter what they brand themselves, what their race or their religion. Hitler was a self-proclaimed Catholic and I'm sure many of his closest circle saw themselves as good Christians.
