I swore months ago to never post another Evony ad. I’ve seen so many, and the direction they’re going seems pretty clear.
But today I’m breaking my vow. I submit to you this screencap, taken by spinach, of an Evony pop-up ad featuring a faceless woman’s torso, obscuring the website spinach was viewing at the time: a biography of feminist poet/theorist Adrienne Rich.
A moment of silence, please.

Sickening as it is, it also gives me a moment to ponder this specific juxtaposition. There was a day not long ago when being a lesbian of Rich's stripe was a political as well as personal experience. In that day, feminism and lesbianism seemed to be much more tightly coupled. Now there are lesbians who are just as anxious to objectify women (and be objectified, apparently) in the way of Evony. The "L Word" is just the best known version of this - one can see it in any of the lesbian bar and event ads in any major city.
The patriarchy is inescapable and ubiquitous. No doubt this is why so many fail to see it for what it is. That is until something like this pops up, covering the biography of someone who provided so much hope to some of us that there could be a different way. Perhaps the only thing more educational would be an Evony ad popping up as one was reading Andrea Dworkin's or Mary Daly's bio.

"It makes you feel like King."
????
Not only is the ad offensive, it's also suffering from a bad translation?

Oh wow. I didn't even know what Evony was! Too bad... it looks like it could be an interesting game, but clearly whoever is marketing it doesn't think it's a good enough game to get people to play it on its own merit. If they need gimmicks like that, it mustn't be worth the time to play.

gross. i also hate how the photo cuts off the woman's face too. As if it's all boobs! no face, no voice, no name, no personality. that's exactly how sexists view women.

Evony said it is going to change the nature of its ads from now on after community complaint. They said they are going to advertise with stuff actually related to the game now. What a crazy idea right? Advertising your product with your product.

Never heard of it. I love my Firefox with AdBlock Plus.

Man, I finally got around to playing Portal (AMAZING GAME OMG*) and being reminded that games like Evony exist is just ridiculous mental whiplash. It's like gameplaygameplayphysicsstrongfemalelea--BOOBIES. Snap.
*yeah, yeah, I'm like 4 years too late. I knew the cake was a lie months before I even knew what the game was called. :p

Okay, it kind of psyched me out to see this woman's name (I've never heard of her, but I'll probably look her up now) seeing as my name is Adrienne Richey. O_o
And to stay on topic, I'm sick of seeing Evony ads. They've gotten so ridiculous.

When I was watching the trailer for Itty Bitty Titty Committee (a movie about queer feminists), an ad came up in the sidebar inviting me to chat with large-breasted women. Maybe the site thought I was looking for titties, not riot grrrls.

Unlike the dire predictions of many dystopian works (Ferenheit 451, Brave New World, 1984) in the future I see, they won't be banning or burning books and intelligent reading materials...they'll just completely obliterate them with advertisements. No one will have enough time to get through all of the ads to read the actual content. Can you say effed-up?

I have resisted getting an ad blocker because I mostly go to sites I want to support, and blocking ads is kind of counter to that. But what with Evony and those FRACKING 'want to loose that fat belly?' 'one easy tip BTW YOU ARE FAT AND UGLY AND WILL DIE ALONE' ads, I've had it.
Ok, so I exaggerated that last one. But not much.
Every now and then, something like this will come along and remind me that the internet is for the menz, what am I doing on it? Like this one from demotivationals http://www.filehurricane.com/media/1662 Anything else aside, since I am a woman, that would be 'rainbows, EXACTLY as gay as you think'.

That is indeed a Rich irony.

Fun fact about Evony: A game design student recently dissected the game itself and found that in addition to being very poorly made, the game effectively acts like data-harvesting malware, sending massive amounts of personal data to the Evony servers. I can't help but feel anyone who would actually click on those ads ends up suffering from karmic justice...

I think it's ridiculous how many advertisements are thrown at us while we're surfing the web. On sites such as Facebook and Google, these advertisements make some sort of sense, but do these advertisers actually think that someone doing research (on a feminist poet no less) is going to stop what they're doing to click on such an ad? I certainly don't think so. While I understand websites need these ads to fund their websites full of free information and media, it seems a little counterproductive, as exemplified above. It'd be nice if we weren't constantly subjected to the bombardment of advertising that we see everywhere on the Internet, but I suppose it's the price we have to pay for Capitalism, right?
