In the face of contentious debate about the value of guns, public health professor David Hemenway decided to have the experts weigh in. He modeled his research on the study of climate change experts that produced the familiar statistic that 97% of them believe that humans are causing climate change. He identified 300 scholars who have published about firearms in the fields of public health, public policy, sociology, and criminology. About 100 each have replied to nine surveys asking their opinions about common controversial statements.

At Mother Jones, Julia Lurie writes: These data “show that a clear majority of experts do not buy the NRA’s arguments.”

Picked the wrong experts, that's all.

That's a nice example of leading survey questions. They could have also asked, for example, "When many people own guns, it reduces the likelihood that the government will gain totalitarian influence over citizens" (Disagree-Agree). "When people own legally guns, it acts as a deterrent to burglary" (Disagree-Agree).

According to a recent article in th Daly Kos, the acres of guns on display at the NRA convention in Nashville this week were required to be rendered inoperable (firing pins removed) because they posed such a danger.

Ultimately these kinds of threads are besides the point. I'm in favor of gun control but I put that out as personal opinion. No new argument is going to convince gun lovers they're wrong to want guns. There's no ah-ha moment coming. And the argument "I know guns are bad so you shouldn't have one." is a loser from the get-go...
This is not going to change.
