Our recent post collecting examples of creative resistance to sexually objectifying advertising was a big hit, which makes me think y’all are going to love this one. The National Eating Disorder Information Center paid to put up a creative ad/trash can. It reads “Shed your weight problem here” and encourages passers-by to dispose of their fashion magazines.
Another great example of how organizations can creatively push back against the harmful messages spread by corporations for profit.

Once again, blaming big/bad corporations is a waste of time and misses the mark. The better questions to ask are how so many magazines like this can thrive in the marketplace, and why do large numbers of women support them financially?

I never read "women's" magazines. Diet programs next to brownie recipies, "20 products for beautiful hair," and "how to attract a man" are just too confusing to my true self.
I believe that, in part, not having these messages around in my home have led my daughter to a wonderful self-image. She loves her body for what it can do, not for how others judge it.
Protecting children from negative stereotypes as long as possible does make a difference. Explaining how and why large companies try to sell us things by changing our views is another.

When 1 in 3 Americans are obese and most of the rest are overweight, throwing away fashion magazines isn't the solution to anyone's weight problem.
