Cross-posted at PolicyMic.At the end of my sociology of gender class, I suggest that the fact that feminists are associated with negative stereotypes — ugly, bitter, man-haters, for example — is not a reflection of who feminists really are, but a sign that the anti-feminists have power over how we think about the movement. The very idea of a feminist, in other words, is politicized… and the opposition might be winning.
A clip forwarded by Dmitriy T.C. is a great example. In the 1.38 minute Fox News clip below, two pundits discuss a North Carolina teacher, Leah Gayle, who was accused of having sex with her 15-year-old student. One of the show’s hosts suggests that feminism is to blame for Gayle’s actions. She says:
There’s something about feminism that lets them know, I can do everything a man does. I can even go after that young boy. I deserve it… It’s turning women into sexualized freaks.
This clip reveals a discursive act. She is defining who feminists are and what they believe. And this idea is being broadcast across the airwaves.
This happens all day every day. Some of the messages are friendly to feminists, and some are not. These messages compete in our collective imagination. Most have little to do with what feminists (who are a diverse group anyway) actually believe and many are outrageous lies and distortions, like this one.
So, next time you hear someone describing a feminist, know that what you’re hearing is almost never a strict definition of the movement. Instead, it’s a battle cry, with one side competing with the other to shape what we think of people who care about women’s equality with men.

I stopped watching Fox New when I began more interested in the outcomes of political elections. From what little I've seen, this doesn't surprise me in the slightest.
Umlud — January 26, 2013
That's odd: I'm a man, and I don't even consider the idea that "I can even go after that young boy" or even young girl to be remotely valid. Being male is not the same as being a pedophile, and if the host can't understand that difference, then she's got problems of her own.
It makes me wonder if the only thing that keeps this host from "going after that young boy" is that she doesn't consider herself allowed to "do everything a man does" (i.e., act out on her construct of both what a feminist is and what a man is).

^^^^^^
Mid-thirties white male. This is what a feminist looks like.
Jake — January 26, 2013
Umlud and YourName, you missed Ms. Tantaros' comment about men going after younger women. I think that's what she was comparing to when she said "I can even go after that young boy." That being said I disagree with her radical characterization of feminists.

Well, I woke up to get me a cold pop. I thought somebody was barbecuing! I said "Lord Jesus, there's a fire!" Then I ran out of there, I didn't grab no shoes, no nothing Jesus! I ran for my life! Then the smoke got me and I got bronchitis! Ain't nobody got time for that!

feminists are the scum of the society, encouraging sex with underage boys is just discusting
Village Idiot — January 26, 2013
They had to throw in a hillbilly joke too. Gosh those three-named people sure are freaky!
And if anyone knows about sexualized freaks, it'd probably be whoever made the commentator look like a blow-up doll, which I assume was done to vividly illustrate her pointy, uh, her profoundly eloquent points.
We're so doomed, or at least it seems that way until I turn off the TV.

Fox is thinking of priests, not feminists.

Fact 1: The new FBI definition of rape excludes all female perpetrated rape because it requires that the victim be penetrated by the perpetrator: " Penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim."
Fact 2: Numerous feminist institutions (including the NOW, the Feminist Majority Foundation, and Ms. Magazine) lobbied for this change. Ms. Magazine proudly announced that "a grassroots feminist activism effort launched by the Feminist Majority Foundation and Ms. magazine, generated over 160,000 emails to the FBI and the Department of Justice urging this change" in a January 2012 report.
Fact 3: According to the Center for Disease Control's "National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS)", the largest and most prestigious study of its kind ever undertaken, 1.27 million men were "forced to penetrate without consent" in 2010. During the same year, 1.27 million women were "penetrated by force without consent." The number of male victims of female violence is EXACTLY the same as the number of female victims of male violence. However, according to the new FBI definition, the 1.27 million male victims of female perpetrated sexual assault were not counted.
In summary, women rape men as often as men rape women, but the new FBI definition of rape, promoted by feminists, does not count male victims of female assault. You can decide for yourself if considering the hypothesis that all of these facts are connected should be called "outrageous lies and distortions".
I have personal experience with this issue. When I was 13 years old, my mother made me (along with my two brothers, 11 and 12 at the time) available to adult women for intimate assault. She is a feminist with a PhD in women's issues who travels the world advising international organizations on women's rights issues. Feminism means the same thing to me today, as it did when I was a 13 year old boy. It is a supremacist hate movement, built on lies. It is about promoting the exploitation of men and boys by women. All kinds of exploitation.

On the one hand, it is known that Fox News are full of crap.
On the other hand, there are way too many people who think they speak gospel truth. (But many people are right - the fact that the presenter thinks this way says more about her than it does about feminism. And it would be nice if people who know nothing about feminism would stop speaking about feminism. Do you ask a chef questions about engineering? No, you ask an engineer. So if you want to ask questions about feminism, ask a feminist.)

Is it just me, or does the implication seem to be that if women seeking out teenage boys are freaks and that feminism makes them think that's okay, then it's normal and expected for men to seek out teenage girls?
Anthony Zarat — January 29, 2013
Feminists are crying in despair because male victims of female assault are demanding recognition? That says everything that you need to know about feminists.
Once again, according to the CDC report on intimate partner violence, the number of male victims of female perpetrated sexual assault in 2010 (1.27 million) EQUALS the number of female victims of male sexual assault (1.27 million). Look at the table and READ the numbers:
http://i.imgur.com/Ps9wW.jpg
What part of table 2.1 and 2.2 is so confusing to feminists? In before ignorant outraged feminist lies: of course the report summary does not acknowledge this parity ... because when females perpetrate non-consensual intercourse, it is not called "rape" by feminists. Feminists re-defined the word in a way convenient to them. Also, the lifetime numbers show significantly more female victims of male assault, than male victims of female assault. One possible explanation for this is that the number of females who assault males is increasing at an unprecedented rate. Can feminists see why this is relevant to the story?
Story is about the effects of feminist religions doctrine on rates of female perpetrated intimate assault.
I present data showing that the rates of female perpetrated intimate assault are (1) equal to the rates of male perpetrated intimate assault and (2) probably rising at almost unbelievable rates. Instead of dealing with the DATA, feminists put their heads in the sand and fling personal assaults. Typical, actually.

Well, it depends. There are a lot of female supremacists (misandrists)
who call themselves feminists, thereby making everything look bad.
There are also a lot of misogynists who call themselves Men's Rights Advocates, who make everything look bad.
There
isn't a qualification to call yourself either one, no membership card.
A lot of bigots hide behind both labels, and this is causing a lot of
misunderstandings.
The reality is that feminist studies, their
own data, show that women commit more abuse towards men than the other
way around, and the same thing with children.
But there is a
statistical problem with that data, because women spend more time around
children. See, it's weird. Let me give you another example: research
shows that children with big feet are smarter. Reality is that children
with big feet are actually older and in a higher grade. See how easy
it is to misrepresent data? You gotta keep your wits about you.
That
being said, a lot of feminist laws are actually giving women special
privileges, which is technically sexist. The VAWA needs to be expanded
to protect citizens of all genders, equally. The goal should be
equality, for men and women and transgender, not special laws that let
women hurt people without going to jail.
This is one of the
criticisms of feminism. Another one is that instead of teaching women
to be strong, like it used to, it teaches them that they are all victims
and that they need help and special resources and safe spaces. This is
technically discrimination against the other genders. When a man gets
hit in the head with a frying pan and becomes homeless because of a
bogus restraining order, there is no shelter for him.
Same thing
with rape, where feminists villainize men. This is bad, especially when
their own studies show that women rape men at the same rate, the
difference is that they call it 'forced to penetrate', and they don't
include it at the end of the study. Sneaky sneaky statistics, you gotta
keep your wits about you and WORK TOGETHER.
Then there is gender roles and victim blaming. Feminist say you can't make a woman take responsibility for her mistakes. It used to just mean rape, which makes sense. Can't blame her for caring about her appearance. Now it has been stretched out to include anything at all. Women are never sentenced as harshly as men are for the same crime.
At the same time, when men screw up feminists will blame them for it, and then say it happened because they are male, not because of their individual character. Technically that is discrimination based on gender. Then they insult men with things like 'Man up' or call them 'pussies'. Calling a man a pussy is actually sexist against women, because it implies that women are weaker than men. It also reinforces gender roles, by implying that a male is expected to do the heavy lifting in society (figuratively and literally).
Boys fall behind in school because majority of the money goes to helping girls. When a man named Warren Farrel tried to organize a seminar to talk about equality and to try to help our male students improve their grades a local college professor organized a blockade of the seminar. Angry young women screamed at the people who tried to enter, threw things at them and hit them, called them chauvinistic pigs.
So yeah, female supremacists have a hold over feminism, and are giving it a bad name. Things aren't the same. At the same time, there are a lot of angry, double divorced men who are sexist against women who call themselves Mens Rights Advocates. It's a crapshoot, excuse my language.

Facts on Statutory Rape:
More than 99% of the offenders of female statutory rape victims were male. 45% of offenders were 21 and older; 18% are younger than age 18.The median age difference between male offenders and their female statutory rape victims was 6 years. More than 94% of the offenders of male statutory rape victims were female. 70% of offenders were 21 and older, only 8% were younger than age 18. The median age difference between female offenders and their male statutory rape victims was 9 years.
Three of every 10 statutory rape offenders were boyfriends or girlfriends and 6 in 10 were acquaintances.
Old enough to know better?
For male victims aged 7- 17, 45% of their female offenders were over 25; for female victims 7 - 17, only 25% of their male offenders were over 25.

It's also pretty bad that women being sexual is mentioned as something unnatural, weird, and unhealthy. Actual rapists aside, I'm completely tired of the idea that women who enjoy and acknowledge that they enjoy sex are "freaks."
Village Idiot — January 29, 2013
This and other recent threads have inspired me to coin a new term, but I can't decide which of several examples would work best, so I'll put them out there as an informal poll.
So, should males who troll blogs under false names normally considered or assumed to be for females (or otherwise adopt a female persona) be called:
A) Homotextuals (i.e. "I'm a woman too! And OMG I hate feminazi's!")
B) Transtextuals
C) Textvestites
D) Transtextites
E) Trollsexuals (Trollosexuals?)
Each has it's pros and cons, of course. And feel free to add others that may be better. I'm kind of partial to option E at the moment. Then maybe the catchiest term could be encouraged to go viral as a new snarky (but helpfully revealing) meme, e.g. "Those trollsexuals got pwned!"
Mr Left09 — January 29, 2013
In other words Lisa Wade.
"Not all feminist are like that!"
Village Idiot — January 29, 2013
Well damn, since the squeamish intern deleted my poll, I guess I'll have to go with "trollsexuals" as a shorthand term for males who troll blogs under false names normally considered or assumed
to be for females (or otherwise adopt a female persona).
