Sociologist Joel Best debunks the idea that “sex bracelets” — bracelets that indicate what type of sex you’re interested in and that oblige you to perform it — are really a thing. He and his colleague, Katherine Bogle, have been tracing the story over time on the internet and across continents in what he calls “the dynamics of rumor and legend.”

I remember talking about sex bracelets back in my high school, in the early 80's. It's been around for so long!

Psh. Everybody knows we've got apps for that now.

Hard to imagine that Kids Today are STILL doing this, but nobody much will care what "Joel Best" is wearing or seeing....

SNL seems to think rumors like this are spread via the evening news:

I've never heard of sex bracelets, but the idea reminds me of the hanky codes amongst gay men.

When I was in grade 7 (2002-2003) I and a lot of other kids used to wear these. Not everyone, but quite a few. People would snap them, and when they were broken I remember feeling legitimately anxious about having to do whatever that act was. Of course, I never did, and no one really expected me to (although they would make fun of me and tell me I had to), but for a few minutes of mocking it was all I could think about. I definitely did "hug" and sometimes "kiss", but of course never the others. I think it's just a childish game to make someone feel pressured and nervous.

"I think that even the most fevered imaginations is going to suspect that there isn't an epidemic of fisting occurring in America's schoolyards"
That made me burst out laughing.
Video is quite interesting. This seems to have links to Berger and Luckmann's social construction of reality. Not only are authorities and news agencies reacting to sex bracelets like they're a widespread problem, but their reactions may spawn the very action they're trying to stop.

sigh I remember junior high school and sex bracelets.. and my curiosity nagging me to wear them.. thank god I didn't because I still didn't understand exactly what I was inviting.

Sounds vaguely like the 'hanky code' of the gay community of yesteryear.
