Anna J., a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, sent in this vintage ad for Spirella girdles that provides a good reminder of how women are repeatedly told that our bodies are never, ever acceptable as they are, but are always in need of “improvement” through the use of products (found at The Great Fitness Experiment):
But hey, if you don’t feel like wearing a girdle, perhaps some tapeworms are your solution:
UPDATE: Reader Syd says the tapeworm ad is a hoax, though other readers disagree, and the practice itself definitely occurred. I don’t know how to find out, but since there’s at least some question about it, I’d take it with caution. However, commenter Angela pointed out that Tyra Banks recently had a story on tapeworms on her show:
As Anna points out, “It’s really interesting how ads have changed over time, but the expectation of culture that women be dieting has remained the same.” Certainly more people wouldn’t tell women to eat a tapeworm — sanitized or not — these days, but plenty of questionable products out there still promise weight loss with “no diet” and “no exercise,” and my bet is you could pick up any women’s magazine currently on the shelf and get a range of advice on how to make sure you lose any weight you might have gained over the holiday season.

The tapeworm ad is commonly seen throughout the internet, and also pretty commonly known to be a hoax.

Here I was thinking tape worm was an allergy cure not a slimming aid...
And since generally I find the way to loose the weight I will innevitably be putting on by sitting on Mum's couch scoffing chocolate all day for a week is to return to my normal pattern of eating and exercising I expect that for me almost *any* loose-weight-fast plan sold to me in the New Year word "work" in as much as it's unlikely they would make me loose weight slower... perhaps this is why there is so much diet advertising after Christmas.

A friend sent me this link a while ago - apparently Tyra Banks had the tapeworm diet on one of her shows, also brought on a guy that sells them online "intended for the treatment of immune dysregulation." Yeah. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2erzR4rMhM (all the parts are available on YouTube in the links list on the right of the page)
I hadn't heard of it before...gross and horrifying.

Actually, tapeworms are a completely different kind of worm that is being touted as a "cure" for various intestinal disorders (nematodes/roundworms).
I have put "cure" in quotes because it is very early days, indeed, for this to be an accepted medical practice. Only a few papers have been published.
It's also important to remember that too many children still perish from worm infestations in many parts of the world.

Looked at the video that was posted as I commented--oh, dear god. They are selling tapeworms?!
Cripes.
The only research I know about is for round worms--and even that is still fairly controversial.

The bottom line, whether it was that women should be fatter at the turn of the century, or sickly thin now, is that these ads target women and put them in the mindset that who they are, how they are, isn't good enough. There is a "perfect other" they should try to attain. This only leads to insecurity and poor self and body image. It should have stopped then but it needs to stop now.

I think it's fairly common knowledge now that people have been critiquing the body shape of women for...well, ever (whatever ideal they might be pushing). What I'm more intrigued about is why all of this critiquing, all the magazines, tv shows and so on don't seem to be having any affect (crap, effect?) on body shape in America today (other than causing mental anxiety). What I mean is, for the amount of reported mental anguish caused by all these ads studies show weight problems are only increasing in america (for both genders). Whereas in other countries (I live in Korea) women seem to be able to manage their weight more effectively (men get a lil bit more paunchy). My thoughts don't necessarily run to image so much as health. I don't believe every woman can or should look like heidi klum (and every guy doesn't need to look like her husband) but it is important to be reasonably fit and at a healthy weight.
Before I get myself off track my real question is this. Preface, it seems like, in other countries/cultures women (and men) are better able to balance their weight (and thus figure) and keep at a relatively healthy size/shape (even if they don't have the "S-line"). So why does it seem like weight issues are growing worse in America even while pop culture is causing such anxiety with their focus on weight and shape?
One thing I've noticed here in korea is that (and perhaps this is the difference) people have no compunction about calling out perceived weight gain or excess weight to friends or family. I've been called out. But God help me if I ever mentioned weight to my sister or mother. However, American's have no issue with calling out smokers (friends and family) and we've seen smoking rates drastically drop since that became normal. Is it simply because weight in America is such a great cultural taboo that we can't respond to the current fat epidemic (and weight and shape in general) in a rational way?
Honestly curious, sorry to be off topic

BOYCOTT AMERICAN WOMEN
Why American men should boycott American women
http://boycottamericanwomen.blogspot.com/
I am an American man, and I have decided to boycott American women. In a nutshell, American women are the most likely to cheat on you, to divorce you, to get fat, to steal half of your money in the divorce courts, don't know how to cook or clean, don't want to have children, etc. Therefore, what intelligent man would want to get involved with American women?
American women are generally immature, selfish, extremely arrogant and self-centered, mentally unstable, irresponsible, and highly unchaste. The behavior of most American women is utterly disgusting, to say the least.
This blog is my attempt to explain why I feel American women are inferior to foreign women (non-American women), and why American men should boycott American women, and date/marry only foreign (non-American) women.
