I think Saints Row 2 is the only game I've ever played that lets you play a woman that's as large as the men.

Because, as any gamer could tell you, games are for men and no man wants to see a fat chick in their games. /sarcasm

I'm surprised they even gave us female avatars. It's getting common for games to have no female character models at all. Call of Duty: Modern Warcraft 2, for example, has NO females in the game other than a few cloned models in a crowd scene.

The portrayal of women in video games is very poor, to say the least. Women are always stereotypically beautiful, impossibly thin, often wearing next to nothing. The fact that APB is actually allowing players to choose a female character who looks as though she weighs more than 95 pounds is actually a step forward in the portrayal of women in video games, sad as it is.

I work in the video game industry, not as a designer or artist, and I've asked this of my co-workers with varying degrees of frustration. The answer is always that "players don't want that". (Hello, I'm a player, and I've just said I want that--where 'that' is small boob options, massive female bodybuilder options, or to be actually fat as a female character. Not just big boobs and thighs, but actual fat.)

What I take it to mean is that the (primarily male) designers don't want to see that, and they don't even take into account that adding more size/weight sliders doesn't take away from their ability to have big-boobed waifs, but adds to my ability to play a woman while not being harassed in game. (I make and play MMOs, which is what APB is.) Or I take it to mean that marketing puts pressure on the designers so that in-game footage they use to market the product does not ever include female characters that are not within the conventionally attractive range. Or possibly it's that it just doesn't occur to them that anyone wants to play a female character like that. Either way, I'm still on the "at least give us pants" argument for the most part, and more body-type options are still a looooooooooong way off.

Because of the assumption that only men play these games, male avatars are there to be identified with (and therefore should have a realistic range of shapes) while female avatars obviously only exist to be ogled and so should begin and end with what the male players are assumed to find attractive.

Fatter female gamers who want an avatar that looks like them are out of luck, because we're assumed not to exist. (After all, IF women even play games, they all want to pretend they look like models, right? Right? *gah*)

Notice that the woman's body is customizable: you can adjust the size and position of her breasts, and the width of her pelvis.

When designing a male avatar, you don't have the option to adjust his proportions, just his size and muscularity. It would be nice if you could specify the width of a male character's chest and hips, or the shape of his rear.

C'mon, video games! Let us customize our eye male candy, too!

I think the poses are worth noticing, too. The difference isn't huge, but what's there is so typical: the male stands very straight, shoulders and hips parallel to the floor, while the female stands slightly hip-cocked.

I might just be seeing it in these particular pics because the male and female bodies pictures are so different (ahem).

How thin do the figures get? If the male one can be made thinner than the female one, then the problem might be more that males are given a greater *range* of body shapes (as opposed to just a greater maximum size). And while by no means do I think that this is good, or even necessarily better than what we're seeing here, I do think that it could reframe the issue slightly.

I both am a gamer and a 3-D artist. The sole limitation on how you can morph a body is how you build the wireframe and skeleton.

EverQuest II doesn't have weight morphs for player characters, but even so, my character, a Halasian Barbarian, is heftier that the "fat" female shown in the game referenced in the article (http://tinyurl.com/DrifaAtTheShrine).

This is quite the contrast from the EQ2 wispy elven characters with their built-in Wonderbras (right side at http://tinyurl.com/WeddingElves).

Honestly, as a plate-armor wearing warrior, I'd rather my paladin be stocky and strong. She's not out there to prance with her tits outthrust, she's supposed to be the poster-child for monster hate, keeping whatever we're fighting pointed at her while everyone else kills it.

Men also have "Facial/Body Hair" options, whereas women just get mandatory all-over body waxes, I guess.

This so unsurprising it's depressing. The exclusion of women from fandom continues unabated.

In some ways though, what's scarier to me is people in the comments on Beefjack suggesting that the male character model represents a person who is "fairly in shape." Clearly many people might see their bodies reflected in that image, as our obesity rates are rising rapidly, and there's nothing inherently wrong with that, but that doesn't erase the fact that the consensus among doctors is that to have a BMI similar to what is presented here constitutes obesity.

What the game designers are communicating here, is that men are the lazier and more disgusting of the two genders. Women in general are prettier and know how to practice better health.

But more importantly, who else is offended that the game only allows you a choice between male and female? I personally would like to see some genderless, or post-human options.

Futhermore, APB doesn't provide the option of the character being in a wheelchair, or have missing limbs.

Pft, no big shock here. Have you played any games lately? The racism/sexism is extreme. I honestly don't blame programmers/grunt artists either. I blame the pushy, egotistical designers who do this crap. Getting to work in the game industry is pretty hard. You have to have major talent, yes. But you also have to have experience. This is just more of men pushing on women, "if you don't look like a super model, get the fuck out. "

As a feminist, this shit pisses me off deeply. Every legitimate hobby/craft/fun thing is a world of men. I feel like I get pushed into stuff that I don't generally care about like, soap operas, shopping, makeup, teen-angst-romance novels, whatever else women are apparently supposed to be into. I'm fucking sick of it. I want to be into other things! How come every time I try I get met with such hostility and close mindedness? It's clear they're trying to exclude people. It's not a matter of "well men don't like to see fat chicks in games!" Well then they don't have to MAKE one. It's just another way to keep women out. If the fucking (american and British) game industry wants to do it then fine, there will always be funner games that include women and they'll sell better!

Soul Calibur 4 has something simliar- you can adjust the man's muscle from muscular to insane, and the woman's from invisible to barely visible. Also, you can adjust the man's body size, and the woman's breast size.

I played the various Tiger Woods (EA) golf games for quite a while, alternating between male and female characters. Not only was there far more customization for male characters allowed, but they had the same upper limit on size. I actually wonder if maybe they came from the same supplier or vendor.

I will say that I'm pleasantly surprised at how both male and female characters can wear makeup.

Okay, a few things: I work in game development, on the art side. Yes, there is a TON of casual sexism even though most of the guys I work with are very liberal and have healthy relationships with women.

However, decisions like this aren't as arbitrary as a lot of people think because although most people seem to think computers just do stuff by magic, an artist creates those body morphs, and also morphs for clothing that will be worn on the body, by hand. That means that there's more pressure than a lot of people realize not to offer features they don't think a lot of players will want because every extra feature adds to production time. The attitude isn't 'Oh we shouldn't have fat women because women need to be pretty.' it's 'Fat women would be great but so few players will play them we should spend that time on a different feature instead.' Having said that, there are a lot of male and female artists who will unconsciously try and make anything to do with women characters prettier and sexier and less mean looking and they don't even step back and think about the overall impression.

I can think of a really good reason women wouldn't want to play as a fat character in an online game and men would though. "fat" is the number one, instant insult to call a woman playing a videogame. Next is 'ugly' and then, almost always they call you a lesbian. I used to play multiplayer shooters like TF2 and L4D and whenever possible I'd play only with friends or on private more mature servers to avoid the 'OMG are you a girl? You must be fat. You sound fat.' bullshit whenever I'd use voicechat.

I doubt many women would want to amplify that by actually playing a fat woman.

The research team was quite varied. Aside from the primary investigators, specialists in other disciplines such as economists and anthropologists were also involved. Database analysis was handled at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Past studies have relied on surveys and self-selected samples. This project involved actual server data from EverQuest 2. The research team analyzed three years of data (over 60 terabytes) from the complete server logs and click-streams of SOE's MMORPG game, EverQuest 2, tracking every action performed in-game. EQ2 has more than 300,000 players who average 26 hours per week playing the game. Because of the intense level of involvement and multi-player environment of the game, the researchers were able to study human behavioral dynamics using the game as a proxy.

It's estimated that in the Western world (ignoring Asia), there are about 40-50 million MMORPG player accounts, mostly fantasy RPGs. Some areas of interest for study are how (or if) the virtual world mirrors real world human interactions. For example, networking behavior, economic behavior, how groups work, how people talk, the way people get into conflicts, the way people learn, etc.

Mapping Principle: when do behaviors in a virtual space act as a proxy for behaviors in real life interactions? In some cases, the results from virtual actions map closely to observed real world results, while in others the results do not correlate well. It's not scientifically possible to say with certainty how accurate the mapping is without further study.

Prior work in this space was primarily ethnographic and survey-based research. This approach has problems due to self-selection and also difficulty in generalizing results. The current project allowed the researchers to work with a huge body of data. This was also correlated with in-game surveys of random players, allowing some interesting depth of insight.

Who plays how much and why?
===========================
It's not kids, not pasty white teenage boys in their mother's basements. This study found the average players were adults in their thirties, there are more players in their 30s than in their 20s. The age range gravitates to older audiences.

EQ2 players tend to play a lot of hours per week. Older players tend to play more hours per week than younger players. Hours spent playing were less than average hours of TV watching per week, and gaming tends to displace consumption of other media such as TV. Players don't watch less news, but they do watch less entertainment television and go out to movies less, replacing their entertainment consumption with gaming.

An unexpected finding was that players tended to be healthier than the general population, as measured by their Body Mass Index (BMI). They tended to be slightly more depressed, but less anxious.

The healthiest participants in this sample were the older women. This led to interesting thinking about gender differences in gaming. Surveys revealed that while women were in the minority of players, they tended to be the most intense players, which is counter-stereotypical. The women were more likely to be bisexual, more likely to be disabled, and were a little bit older on average than the men.

Researchers have fairly strong notions of gendered behavior in a society, which is to say that they acknowledge both nature and nurture, and realize that people's behaviors are shaped by gender roles into which they are socialized. Scientists realize and recognize that there are roles and expectations of types of behaviors that people feel they must stay within, and therefore they tend to expect women to behave certain ways and men to behave differently. The research team in this study made hypotheses about these behaviors and found that, in fact, men are indeed the majority of players in this space, which was not surprising, because frankly, these games are mostly made by men, for men.

However, when the researchers looked at who the "hard-core" players are, as defined by the intensity of play and the attitude towards play, the hard-core players were the women. Women play more hours per week (four more hours per week), and are much less likely to quit a game. Women were also much higher on measures of satisfaction and interest in the game than male players. When researchers looked at the players playing at the very high end, the players playing the largest amounts, the women are much more highly represented than they are in the overall player population.

This led to an interesting side-finding with some implications for social science research and this area in general, which is the difference between how much time a player self-reported that they played, versus how much they actually played as reflected in the server logs. When people were asked how much they play, they estimated between 24 and 26 hours, but they actually played 25 to 29 hours per week. This is interesting and notable for two reasons:

(1) It suggests that the past 30 years of scientific estimates of game play in prior studies relying on self-reported estimates are incorrect, and may be off by as much as 10% if these findings are generalizable, and that marginal findings in this research are suspect.

(2) The women clearly have a bigger gap in these two forms of data than men do, which suggests that women are either lying to themselves or lying to researchers moreso than the men are, which may confirm that these are gendered behaviors and gendered expectations. If video games are, in fact, "for boys", then you would expect women to underreport more, as there might be a social stigma or shame value attached. The observed behavior seems to fit this explanation.

Men and Women Playing Together
==============================
Another side finding is what happens when men and women or boys and girls play together. When men and women play together, the women are happy and the men are less happy. When they play apart, the men are happier and the women are less happy. Thus, what's good for the goose is not good for the gander. The women like to be playing in relationships, the men are less happy when doing so.

Roleplaying
===========
Another interesting finding came when looking at roleplayers. These are "Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games", which suggests that people are pretending to be something they are not, taking on the "role" of a character they are playing. In fact, the study found that relatively few people actually participate in roleplaying. A "moderate" level of roleplaying might be 15% of the players. When people are asked who is an "intense" roleplayer, that tended to be about 5% of the players, and these people are very, very different than the rest of the players. The roleplayers play for different reasons, and seem to have different outcomes. Why roleplayers roleplay, what do they get out of roleplaying, the kinds of identity issues, these are all rich avenues for future investigation.

The roleplayers are psychologically much worse off than non-roleplayers. They tend to be more depressed, they tend to have been diagnosed with more ailments and illnesses, they are more likely to be physically disabled. Gameplay does not make them this way: interviews with these players tends to reveal use of gaming and roleplaying as coping mechanisms for dealing with pre-existing problems. It is hypothesized that roleplaying is an adaptation for people who are less accepted in real life spaces, and who go into gameworlds to be "who they truly are" or who they want to be.

Investigating the demographics of roleplayers, intense roleplayers were more likely to be non-heterosexual, non-mainstream-religion, and minorities. The further out of the mainstream population they were, the more likely a player is to engage in roleplay. This suggests that the game space may be a little less judgemental and more accepting.

I'm a bit late to the discussion, but this is somewhat related: APB is an upcoming game that uses its extensive character customization as a trumpeted feature and a main selling point.

To advertise the feature, they're currently sponsoring "The Human Avatar Project," in which online voters decide what modifications (hair, tattoos, piercings) to make to a real guy. It's not very clear but it seems from the t&c that both males and females were considered, but it's now narrowed down to a choice of two guys. The one who "wins" will be transformed as voters see fit.

I'm not sure where to begin with this but let me begin by stating the obvious. We as a society can agree that the majority of games whether online or for the major gaming consoles are directed to the male persuasion. There is no getting around that fact. I have had a gaming console of some kind from the time I was about 8 or 9 until now and I honestly can say that I have enjoyed the gradual changes that have occured. Technology is great but it is also biased in its own right. How do you figure that you may ask? I have said before and I will say it again. The adage: "Sex sells" is universal. How can I say such a thing when it is clear that the gaming industry is a male dominated domain? Because society in general is taught to enjoy, treasure and do whatever you can to attain beauty because it will get you ahead in life. Sounds a bit silly and maybe a little outlandish but look around and you will see what I am talking about. Unfortunately this reality has carried over into the gaming industry. I really don't play to many games online but the few games that I do own allow me to customize either a male or female character to a degree. Society whether realistic or virtual would prefer "eye candy" over a complete disaster. Sure you want to be able to create a character that fits who you are from head to toe but some of us lose reality of who we truly are and create what we want people to see. By no means am I upset with that but I sure as hell don't want people to start pretending to be what they are not. I'm sure have read this and are thinking this guy is a bit off but trust me Electronic Arts has been in gaming market for a long time now and they know just as well as I do men want to fulfill fantasies. If it weren't true then how in the world did Laura Croft from the Tomb Raider gaming series become an addiction for most as well as an international star? Just something to think about.
