Adding in prior recessions and changing the absolute job losses into percentage terms leaves a much less dramatic picture, though.
(Not saying that we're not in serious trouble.)

I agree with Jesse - the unemployment percentage is a much better way to compare the different downturns. Population size and makeup changes too much for the absolute numbers to be the best picture.

Couldn't agree more. The graph is misleading. So many of our markets were riding high (way beyond "normal") prior to the crash. Any comparisons with the highs are misleading.
