This image demonstrates the disproportionality in the marriage market across the United States (found here). Basically, if you’re a single, heterosexual woman on the west coast or a single, heterosexual man in the New York area, you’re in luck!
NEW! This map is now available in an interactive form in which you can choose which age group to look at. Below I’ve pasted in screen shots of my current dating pool (30-45) and what I have to look forward to (yikes!). Click here to interact with the map yourself.

Maybe it's just me - but the weirdest thing about that map is the concentration of women in the east vs. men in the west. I don't know what would explain that.
Are there that many more military bases out west?
I got my M.A. in NYC and it did seem easier to meet women there than in the SF Bay Area, where I was an undergrad and later finished my schooling (at UC Berkeley). Way back when it seemed difficult to meet women at Berkeley, because there were significantly more men students than women students. I understand that has changed in recent years though.

This map reminds me of a joke that used to be told by women in Alaska:
"The odds are good, but the goods are odd."

Weird. We had an exchange in our research group (admittedly off-topic) 2 days ago, which consisted of:
1 - a description of this map.
2 - oldmayfly's comment.
Not sure what to do with that information. Just thought it was an odd/amusing thing to see replicated that quickly (and i don't *think* oldmayfly is from our group, though i suppose i could be wrong about that).

You're right. I'm not in any group. Just found this site and really like it.
