Yan sent me this link to the Brigham Young University dress code. Here are some examples:
One of the things I think is really interesting is how aggressively multicultural the posters are. The Mormon church did not allow black men to be priests (and therefore they could not ascend to the highest level of heaven) until 1978.
Thanks Yan!

You know what's funny? I lived in Utah long enough that I forgot these were weird. Or that catalogs for modest wedding dresses weren't normal.
BYU is very homogeneous religiously, but quite diverse in terms of race, ethnicity, and nationality. There is a large foreign student population and they actively seek Mormon students from around the U.S. and the world. One result of this is there is a large Pacific Islander (esp. Samoan and Tongan) population in the area as students have settled in the area and brought in family members.
It's weird looking at it as a sociologist--there are so many things I don't like, and yet it's about the most diverse campus you'll see that isn't a community college.
Although for obvious reasons the Mormon church hasn't made many inroads in the African-American population :)

Why the Taco Bell-style chihuahua ("Yo quiero [something]")? That seems so random.
Village Idiot — June 5, 2008
The chihuahua is because they're soooo cute, and as we all know college students are kids who like cute things.
A friend of mine was thrown out of BYU, and excommunicated by the church elders a long time ago. He went on to become an underwear model. He made a modest living doing that (sorry about the pun, but it's true and a fantastic story).
Nice to think that all someone has to do to become respectable is get a $15 haircut and a change of clothes. That much emphasis on the external makes people who buy into it very easy to fool. Just consider the televangelists and priests and other clergy and what sorts of shenanigans many of them find themselves explaining and apologizing for. But... But they looked so nice!
"I'd die first!" is extremely disturbing. Death Before Short Skirts?! Really?
It's the Xtian version of the Taliban. Remember, God made you a dirty and shameful creature. Hide yourself!

sorry for the very lateness of the dialogue, but I found this through links posted today, and had to jump in. I'm a BYU alumni who adores Soc Images.
"I'd Die First!" is a quote from Brigham Young Academy founder Karl Maeser, and is not related to fashion at all.
"I have been asked what I mean by my word of honor. I will tell you. Place me behind prison walls-- ever so high, ever so thick, reaching ever so far into the ground - there is a possibility that in some way or another I will escape; but stand me on a floor and draw a chalk line around me and have me give my word of honor never to cross it. Can I get out of the Circle? No. Never! I would die first."
That's the entire context for the first flyer. The rest are all pretty much within the context of mainstream mormon culture as well ("Head, shoulders, knees, and toes" is a song in the LDS children's song book).
Secondly, I have to say I'm very disappointed in the last paragraph of this post. What does a policy the church no longer holds have to do with the posters, at all? Why not discuss BYU's actual demographics in how they compare with the posters? (here they are, by the way: http://yfacts.byu.edu/viewarticle.aspx?id=135).

sorry, I forgot to leave my name. "Anonymous" is me.

I don't understand the point behind this post. This is a website that mostly points out the sexual inequalities that men and women are portrayed in in the media, right? So why is this post here? How are posters that are encouraging covering up, instead of sexualizing (probably not a real word, sorry) yourself, portraying any sexual inequality for either sex? I don't agree with most of what BYU does, or how focused on appearance they are as a school, but the point behind it for the LDS church is so that you are noticed for what you can DO as a person, not for how you look, or how sexy you may or may not be.

Enforcing an idea of modesty sexualizes the body- there's no problem with nudity, aside from the sexual connotations. That's the issue.
Naomi — June 14, 2010
I agree that there is no problem with nudity unless there are sexual connotations (XXX movies VS the Statue of David), but I disagree that modesty sexualizes the body, unless that's what gets you off. When I had the body to confidently wear less modest clothes, I had boys always trying to get me to sleep with them, or at least make out with them, and when I wouldn't because I didn't want to, I was called a tease and then ignored. When I felt I couldn't wear clothes like that anymore and started to cover up more, I found that the boys I met that showed interest in me were less likely to call me a tease and try to get me sleep with them, and more likely to actually try to get to know me. Though I have seen plenty of men and women wearing clothes that cover them that certainly aren't "modest" just by how tight they are, or how they carry themselves. If you are wearing your clothes to get people to look at your body and think you are sexy, you are not being modest, as I understand modesty to mean. There's more to it than covering up every inch of flesh, IMHO.

Hi everyone, im suprised at many of the comments posted but stop to think for a moment who you would appreciate the company of? Would it be someone who judges you, accepts you the way you are,or simply someone looking for "special interest"?
BYU is a well known university for many reasons. Admission is not based on only religion or of certain race. Someone like YOU has the oppurtunity to attend. The question is, How far are you willing to go? Yes, most of the students attending are of the same religion , but only because they know what they are looking for in life and what a better way to do it than to share it with a classmate of the same standards and beliefs.
