Ha ha funny!
(Thanks to my Christmas-celebrating friend Jacki for the heads up!)
Addendum: I had previously written “shiksa friend,” and my mother called me to tell me to take the word “shiksa” down; she hates that word. I told her it was intended ironically. And that “non-Hannukah-celebrating” was too clunky! Is shiksa a bad word??

Yes, it is a derogatory word, I think, no matter how you use it. It's like "Jap" or "goy" or a few other choice words I won't put down at this time. At least that's my opinion, for what it's worth!! Renee (Deborah's mom!!!!)

Okay, that's hilarious. Thank you so much for posting this; now I have to share it with everyone I know.
Unfortunately, I can't help you on the "shiksa" front. Despite my name, I'm not Jewish...but I say moms are usually right. ;-)

Shiska? There was (still is maybe, I don't know) a Jewish fraternity when I was at Iowa in the 80's. A friend was always dragging us to their parties because she had a crush on a guy who lived there. The guys referred to us as "shiskas". When I asked why, one of them told me that we were the kinds of girls they "dated" but didn't take home to meet mom. So, I think your mom is right on this one.

My dear Debbie: At the risk of being even more offensive than your original remark, I say shiksa is not so bad so long as it is followed with the word goddess. Oh, okay, I guess that point highlights why the word is problematic to begin with. But I say "take back the shiksa." (With all due respect to Renee!!!)

Oh my gosh - I am loving this. The Great "Shiksa" Debate of 2008!!! Oops--I take it back. I meant: The Great Shiksa Goddess Debate of 2008. Thank you for the clarification Virginie. Renee?
And hey Aviva, you're not Jewish? Really?! I love your name :)

Still think the word is a baaaaaaaaaad word!! Virginia, the words "Shiksa" and "goddess" cancel each other out!! There is no way they can be combined-- it's like a positive and a negative valence-- you get nothing!!!! Or, in another language that corresponds to the first word, you get "bubkus"!!!! Debbie, what a poet you are, even with a baaaaaaaad word to begin with!! Very funny. renee
