Unrelated, but I have also seen a page detailing research done to create wearable haptic systems to provide physical feedback about virtual objects nearby. Something along the lines of a vibrating belt which, with intensity and direction, gives the wearer information when they are in the presence of a virtual object. Seemed like a natural addition to this kind of vastly advanced digital visualizing system. Could even be used to warn of approaching physical objects which have been blotted out by a digital overlay...
I quite like the concept of augmenting the virtual through means other than simple visuals. A combination could create very interesting immersive systems!
