Given these benefits, it is worth asking about where forgiveness comes from and who is most likely to extend it?<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Social Pressure to Forgive<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forgiveness is often assumed to be a purely individual decision, a choice that communicates permission to release guilt and shame. But this apparent personal choice is <\/span><b>rarely made in isolation and independent from our <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=HiZTZifesZoC&amp;printsec=copyright#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\"><b>social world<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In reality, expectations from friends and family, community values and norms, and social inequalities shape our likelihood of forgiving others, and forgiving ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The public reputation for being <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forgiving<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or not, plays an important role in our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taylorfrancis.com\/books\/mono\/10.4324\/9781315014029\/interpersonal-theory-psychiatry-harry-stack-sullivan\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reflected appraisal<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or our <\/span><b>tendency to act<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> how we feel <\/span><b>others expect us to<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.proquest.com\/openview\/e3ad1d720e1dfb4f54c53164daa13c3a\/1?pq-origsite=gscholar&amp;cbl=38088\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, forgiving <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neighbors for transgressions <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a quasi-commandment in Christianity. When it comes to forgiving oneself, however, many religious traditions teach that <\/span><b>self-forgiveness is <em>not<\/em> ours to grant. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, research has highlighted the religious interpretation that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/17439760.2019.1579361\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forgiveness or absolution must come from a divine source<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Gender and Race<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In romantic relationships, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/guilfordjournals.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1521\/jscp.2008.27.8.843\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women are generally more forgiving than men <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and have <\/span><b>higher expectations to forgive a male partner<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for serious harms, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pure.psu.edu\/ws\/portalfiles\/portal\/49716796\/2002_Forgiveness_or_Breakup_Shackelford.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexual infidelity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taylorfrancis.com\/chapters\/edit\/10.4324\/9781351123341-15\/forgiveness-dark-side-intimate-relationships-kristina-coop-gordon-zahra-amer-katherine-lenger-meagan-brem-donald-baucom-douglas-snyder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intimate partner violence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This gender-based norm that women should be inherently more forgiving than men, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dulwichcentre.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/05-Jussey.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suggests a degree of social coercion to forgive a male partner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 even when <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">authentic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feelings of forgiveness may be absent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, the expectation to forgive can further<\/span><b> victimize marginalized communities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through applying <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spssi.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/josi.12614\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social pressure to forgive systemic harms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as racial discrimination or state violence, without adequate recognition, accountability, or repair. For instance, the historical and present day offensive stereotype of the \u201cAngry Black Woman\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sharronapearl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/UWSC_A_1744208_O.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">functions as a means to paint Black women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as overly angry and bitter in response to racism and sexism, and not as likely to forgive. Then at the system level in the United States, discussions around \u201creparations\u201d, or a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;id=HbBQIGiEp9gC&amp;oi=fnd&amp;pg=PR9&amp;dq=pressure+to+forgive+black+race&amp;ots=FCQhAYGk_E&amp;sig=v705R6dXh-0sSi0LIvnm4g_XFlQ#v=onepage&amp;q=pressure%20to%20forgive%20black%20race&amp;f=false\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">material atonement for nearly 250 years of race-based slavery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, often include arguments for and against system-level forgiveness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Individual and State Level Crime<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research on victims of crimes shows that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S002210310800139X\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">victim\u2019s sense of justice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d1wqtxts1xzle7.cloudfront.net\/92548532\/009164712091518120221017-1-bb6fqp-libre.pdf?1665968147=&amp;response-content-disposition=inline%3B+filename%3DApology_and_Restitution_Offender_Account.pdf&amp;Expires=1760382314&amp;Signature=eYVQLz3v30W3jmBdxaBnyF1Puo4jx2uxhwCkBWQFoDP8zYoVyeqK5YjZMiZEXiwkUJLUlbrQYrtui5pqXLwLegbk2dsrVfR1s-sk2Fcr25R3RF2dvwqm2g-RpTtO-vuHJ~kW9mFdd91TZCwWZcsgZRMPWF3j8FwN2zE~Qtv02VCgFjrosl-tRFo8WnI-rFV522RHNBP0m15nwjnud7gJPKBaoZvPPwxSiLbhzaJQLYCTOaTeIIrPPjBzmZDo~4e3r6u2Rf~rzXK627-2J8-Wxwe8nVXeRaGvfoVja0Z-E1CALr04RVRFp9D159zdNMe39QkM2YIcQ32Nw5A80I~sBg__&amp;Key-Pair-Id=APKAJLOHF5GGSLRBV4ZA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evaluation of an offender&#8217;s authenticity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of expressed remorse are key for their decision on<\/span><b> whether to forgive. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victims are more likely to consider forgiveness if they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11292-005-8126-y\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perceive their offender as repentant, receive a sincere apology, and if restitution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is promised and followed through on. For offenders, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33709484\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forgiveness therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/259120454_Forgiveness_intervention_for_female_South_Korean_adolescent_aggressive_victims\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forgiveness interventions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been used as an intervention to promote self-forgiveness to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/1477370819895959\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">limit feelings of shame<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Kristina-Murphy\/publication\/258124866_Testing_the_importance_of_forgiveness_for_reducing_repeat_offending\/links\/5ed88bcd45851529453125a8\/Testing-the-importance-of-forgiveness-for-reducing-repeat-offending.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even recidivism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for some crimes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.evworthington-forgiveness.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everett Worthington<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and others note that large-scale forgiveness, such as after <\/span><b>mass violence or systemic injustice<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can provide the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taylorfrancis.com\/books\/mono\/10.4324\/9780203942734\/forgiveness-reconciliation-everett-worthington-jr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">groundwork for reconciliation and peace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In Rwanda, post-genocide <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;id=tBmfDQAAQBAJ&amp;oi=fnd&amp;pg=PR7&amp;dq=Rwanda,+post-genocide+gacaca+community+courts+incorporated+practices+of+confession,+apology,+and+forgiveness&amp;ots=ntNQJNuDon&amp;sig=1Z8avSwddMZSzIjRoSNHQhtAp7Y#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gacaca<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> community courts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> incorporated practices of confession, apology, and forgiveness to address the widespread violence, sometimes between neighbors.
