And with its popularity has come\u00a0a media frenzy \u2014 Thieves are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2016\/jul\/10\/pokemon-go-armed-robbers-dead-body\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">luring defenseless children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! Those <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/08\/01\/health\/distracted-driving-not-just-texting-pokemon-go\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">troublesome millennials are playing while driving<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! The game is <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2016\/08\/08\/pokemon-go-iran\/88389048\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even banned in Iran<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Popular games have long sparked moral panics and public anxiety about the well-being of our youth and their distinctive cultural tastes and subcultural practices. But we shouldn\u2019t be so quick to panic. In <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/2016\/08\/05\/people-play-pokemon\/\">an overview of the game<\/a>\u00a0over at <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyborgology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Marley-Vincent Lindsey argues that casting the game as \u201cgood\u201d or \u201cbad\u201d ignores important social context. He explains,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%89mile_Durkheim\">\u00c8mile Durkheim<\/a> would have called it the collective effervescence of the 1990s: an activity as much about the affect and socialization produced as it was about the game. Nintendo may have designed it, but people made it real.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in fact, social science research gives us a more measured perspective on the good, the bad, and the Pok\u00e9.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Games create powerful social spaces where people can share a common emotional focus. This draws us in, and it is a foundation for all kinds of human social behavior. Too often, we <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/mobile-lifestyle\/warning-pokemon-go-is-a-death-sentence-if-you-are-a-black-man-acacb4bdae7f#.660d50vn7\">assume everyone can approach public space in the same way<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which can blind us to the ways in which patterns of play mirror and reproduce <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.citylab.com\/work\/2016\/08\/why-it-sucks-to-play-pokemon-go-if-youre-poor\/494765\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">residential segregation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Research also shows how legal systems work to \u201cbanish\u201d certain people from public spaces.
