Some reviews argue Adams <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/entertainment\/archive\/2015\/09\/ryan-adams-taylor-swift-1989\/406744\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cvindicated\u201d Taylor Swift as an artist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; others argue that <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/2015\/9\/23\/9384571\/ryan-adams-1989-taylor-swift-review\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emotional depth was already present<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Swift\u2019s songwriting and reviews of Adams\u2019 cover operate under gendered understandings of emotions and legitimacy in pop music. Many publications that reviewed Adams\u2019 version <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/style-blog\/wp\/2015\/09\/24\/is-it-okay-that-ryan-adams-covered-taylor-swifts-1989\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did not review Swift\u2019s original<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ironically, the albums will be competing for a Grammy this year, and many think <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/perezhilton.com\/2015-09-25-taylor-swift-1989-ryan-adams-cover-album-grammys-nominations\/?from=post\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adams will take it over Swift<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Sociological studies of popular music show how gender affects who gets credit for creativity in the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research finds that male musicians, regardless of genre, are more likely to receive critical recognition and be \u201cconsecrated\u201d into the popular music canon. Women are less likely to be seen as \u201clegitimate\u201d artists and are more often judged on their emotional authenticity and connections with \u201cmore\u201d legitimate, male artists. Musical genres are gendered, as well as raced and classed. Industry norms require women and men to adopt different styles depending on the music genre in which they work.
