Recent challenges to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2015\/02\/11\/supreme-court-affirmative-action\/23233563\/\">admissions procedures<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2015\/jan\/22\/arizona-state-university-offers-course-on-the-prob\/\">classes on race<\/a> highlight problems with whiteness, raising questions about the state of college diversity. \u00a0But what often gets left out of these conversations is\u00a0the impact of diversity on learning itself and the nuances of how these impacts differ between students.<\/p>\n<h5>A diverse student environment can have a positive effect on learning, especially since students from other backgrounds can help each other think about topics differently. In addition, students can learn from the lived experiences of their out-group peers.<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www-personal.umich.edu\/~pgurin\/\">Patricia Gurin<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/socialwork.uw.edu\/faculty\/biren-ratnesh-nagda\">Biren (Ratnesh) A.
