Blow mentions that he was glad he had had \u201cthe talk\u201d with his son&#8212;how to deal with police as a black man:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This is the scenario I have always dreaded: my son at the wrong end of a gun barrel, face down on the concrete. I had always dreaded the moment that we would share stories about encounters with the police in which our lives hung in the balance, intergenerational stories of joining the inglorious \u201cclub.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When that moment came, <strong>I was exceedingly happy I had talked to him about how to conduct himself if a situation like this ever occurred.<\/strong> Yet I was brewing with sadness and anger that he had to use that advice.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Blow is not the only parent to impart such advice&#8212;recall New York Mayor Bill de Blasio\u2019s controversial <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/ny-mayor-bill-de-blasio-spoke-bluntly-on-race-policing-in-ways-harder-for-obama\/2014\/12\/05\/58900a32-7bf6-11e4-b821-503cc7efed9e_story.html\">comment<\/a> about advising his biracial son in dealings with police. Poor, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/posteverything\/wp\/2014\/11\/06\/i-taught-my-black-kids-that-their-elite-upbringing-would-protect-them-from-discrimination-i-was-wrong\/\">middle-class<\/a>, and even rich and well-known*\u00a0parents of children of color advise their children on how to stay safe&#8212;to thrive, they must survive.<\/p>\n<h5>Scholars call how parents talk to their children about racial discrimination and how to cope with it \u201cpreparation for bias,\u201d and it is just one practice among several that comprise <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/reading-list\/another-form-of-concerted-cultivation-teaching-kids-to-expect-racism\/\">ethnic-racial socialization<\/a>.<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/steinhardt.nyu.edu\/appsych\/faculty_bios\/view\/Diane_Hughes\">Diane Hughes<\/a> et al. 2006. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/journals\/dev\/42\/5\/747\/\">Parents\u2019 Ethnic-Racial Socialization Practices: A Review of Research and Directions for Future Study<\/a>.\u201d <em>Developmental Psychology<\/em> 42(5).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Sociologist Patricia Hill Collins powerfully conveys how this work is done by black women sharing child-rearing responsibilities within woman-centered networks.<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socy.umd.edu\/facultyprofile\/Collins\/Patricia%2520Hill\">Patricia <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socy.umd.edu\/facultyprofile\/Collins\/Patricia%2520Hill\">Hill<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socy.umd.edu\/facultyprofile\/collins\/patricia%2520hill\"> Collins<\/a>. 1999. \u201cBlack Women and Motherhood.\u201d In <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/0415924839\/\">Black Feminist Thought: Knowledge, Consciousness, and the Politics of Empowerment<\/a><\/em>. 2nd edition. New York: Routledge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>And these lessons seem necessary: Black adolescent males report repeated negative interactions with police and black mothers report constant worry about the well-being of their sons, who they believe are profiled and targeted by both police and other citizens.<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/webapp4.asu.edu\/directory\/person\/1147078\">Cady Berkel<\/a> et al. 2008. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10964-008-9346-z%23page-1\">It Takes a Village: Protecting Rural African American Youth in the Context of Racism<\/a>.\u201d <em>Journal of Youth and Adolescence<\/em> 38(2).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Parents emphasize racial barriers and protocol to prepare their children for racism, often using role-playing to demonstrate how to reduce risk in reacting (or not reacting) to discrimination.<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uncg.edu\/hdf\/facultystaff\/Coard\/coard.html\">Stephanie I.
