By making services like text encryption available by default, this trend provides extra privacy for\u00a0<i>some\u00a0<\/i>users (mostly those who aren\u2019t already targeted for surveillance),\u00a0despite\u00a0criticism from law enforcement that it shields criminal networks from investigation. While we usually think about privacy as an individual right to be left alone, social science shows why these trends are important for a\u00a0<i>public<\/i>\u00a0conversation about what privacy should be.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"color: #222222;\">Americans\u2019 emphasis on the right to privacy remains high, and while public opinion did tend to favor increased government surveillance immediately following September 11th, 2001, support for these practices has declined since.<\/h5>\n<ul style=\"color: #222222;\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.polisci.uconn.edu\/people\/faculty\/?samuel_best\">Samuel J. Best,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uri.edu\/artsci\/psc\/krueger.html\">Brian S. Krueger<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.polisci.uconn.edu\/people\/faculty\/?jeffrey_ladewig\">Jeffrey Ladewig<\/a>. 2006. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/3843987\">Privacy in the Information Age<\/a>\u201d\u00a0<i>The Public Opinion Quarterly\u00a0<\/i>70(3): 375-401.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 style=\"color: #222222;\">But privacy isn\u2019t just isolation from governments or other people. Classic research argues it is an ongoing social relationship where we negotiate interactions with others, and more current work shows this relationship changes across time and place.<\/h5>\n<ul style=\"color: #222222;\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/altman.socialpsychology.org\/\">Irwin Altman.<\/a> 1975.<i>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/eric.ed.gov\/?id=ED131515\">The Environment and Social Behavior: Privacy, Personal Space, Territory, and Crowding<\/a><\/i>. It also finds\u00a0this focus on individual behavior ignores structural privacy concerns about the devices themselves and how people learn to interact with them.
