In 1492 he sailed the ocean blue and\u2014well\u2014historians, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/10\/11\/re-narrating-columbus-day\/\">sociologists<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.xkcd.com\/1255\/\" target=\"_blank\">even web comic artists<\/a>\u00a0have been reminding us for a while now that he didn&#8217;t really &#8220;discover&#8221; America, so much as find the native peoples who were already living there. So, how does the narrative of Columbus day (or any other story in our history textbooks) keep coming up the same way year after year?<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"display: inline !important;\">Columbus&#8217; voyage isn&#8217;t the only historical story we tend to get wrong in the classroom.<\/h5>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/sundown.afro.illinois.edu\/\">James Loewen<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lies-My-Teacher-Told-Everything\/dp\/0743296281\"><i>Lies My Teacher Told Me<\/i><\/a>\u00a0(2nd ed.), 2007.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>These stories aren&#8217;t just mistakes, though.
