As early as 2012, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Columbia Journalism Review<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archives.cjr.org\/cover_story\/journalism_by_numbers.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> featuring <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archives.cjr.org\/data_points\/regional_data_journalism_becom.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">examples<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of local and regional outlets beginning to publish stories with graphs, charts, and visualizations online. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/tow_center_reports\/managing-a-newsroom-workforce-nyc-case-study.php\/\">New York City news media<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in particular, data, analytic, and platform-based positions now account for nine percent of all media jobs &#8212;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marking considerable growth since 2010. Studies also show that, in today\u2019s journalistic job market, entry-level journalists are often expected to have skills in data journalism, social media, and analytics in addition to traditional reporting and editing skills. Social science research shows how social forces contribute to this shift.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Legacy media organizations including the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post produce news at breakneck speed in a 24\/7 news cycle, and are constantly innovating to find the most profitable and efficient methods to distribute news to the public. Established data journalism programs at higher education institutions include <a href=\"https:\/\/journalism.columbia.edu\/ms-data-journalism\">Columbia Journalism School <\/a>and the <a href=\"https:\/\/dsa.missouri.edu\/data-journalism-strategic-communication\/\">University of Missouri\u2019s M.S. in Data Science &amp; Analytics<\/a>, while other institutions offer data journalism courses taught by part-time, adjunct, and\/or visiting instructors who specialize in the field.
