While some faith groups are becoming <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/religion\/2018\/5\/07\/inclusiveness-asset-major-lgbt-affirming-churches-and-synagogues\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">open and affirming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the recent Supreme Court decision in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/2018\/06\/symposium-the-masterpiece-ruling-calls-for-increased-vigilance-of-discrimination-in-the-marketplace\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and stories of LGBTQIA+ exclusion at religiously-affiliated institutions like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/95stories.wordpress.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hope College<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.onewheaton.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheaton College<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show continued conflict between religion and sexuality, even in an era when Americans have become more accepting of same-sex relationships. Social science research shows that these challenges continue, but it also demonstrates how people don&#8217;t always have to choose between faith and being faithful to who they are. <\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Religious institutions are clearly changing. Even churches without formal welcoming statements often accept LGBT members, sometimes in contrast to the policies of their national organizations.
