In addition to the recent slew of (sometimes violent) demonstrations protesting conservative speakers on campuses, some <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/2017\/03\/23\/conservative-students-at-lutheran-college-say-fear-for-personal-safety-some-leave-remain-silent.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conservative students report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that they feel physically endangered by the fervor of their liberal peers. This is leading many to keep a low profile about their political views, or some to even transfer. Others, however, are becoming highly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/teens-support-donald-trump\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defensive, polarizing, and contrarian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in their political views, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/03\/18\/opinion\/sunday\/how-liberal-colleges-breed-conservative-firebrands.html?_r=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are more likely to become a \u201cfirebrand\u201d of conservatism as a result of their experience.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sociological research shows how these trends are not entirely new, and a college\u2019s institutional culture can shape conservatives&#8217; attitudes and activism. <\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We traditionally assume that young adults tend to be more liberal, and then grow more conservative as they get older. Yet political views are more contingent on the act of rebelling versus conforming. Classic sociological research shows that conservative students \u00a0in the 60s often followed the views of their parents, while more liberal students said they were actively rebelling against theirs.<\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colby.edu\/directory\/profile\/neil.gross\/\">Neil Gross<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/tommedvetz.net\/\">Thomas Medvetz<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sociology.fas.harvard.edu\/people\/rupert-russell\">Rupert Russell<\/a>. 2011. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.annualreviews.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1146\/annurev-soc-081309-150050?journalCode=soc\">The Contemporary American Conservative Movement<\/a>.\u201d <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annual Review of Sociology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 37: 325-354.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssc.wisc.edu\/soc\/faculty\/show-person.php?person_id=34\">Russell <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Middleton and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Snell_Putney\">Snell Putney<\/a>. 1963. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/2573283\">Student Rebellion against Parental Political Beliefs<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Forces<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 41(4): 377\u2013383.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More recent studies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> focus on mobilization in college conservative movements, finding that institutional features of different schools can change how these groups express their beliefs. College professors tend to be more liberal, due to their advanced educational backgrounds, the disparity between their level of education and their income, and their demographic trend towards identifying with more liberal religious chapters.
