This has drawn <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/updates\/cabinet-diversity-impact-policy-making\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">criticism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but why is\u00a0diversity a good thing\u00a0for governments and other organizations? Social science research shows how diversity helps, but also how organizations often limit diversity by warping what it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">means <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to their members. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diversity can be quite beneficial for organizations. For example, schools with a more diverse student body experience superior educational outcomes. Similarly, in business, employee racial or gender diversity predicts higher sales revenue and market share. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernsydney.edu.au\/staff_profiles\/uws_profiles\/doctor_nida_denson\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nida Denson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gseis.ucla.edu\/directory\/mitchell-chang\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mitchell J. Chang<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. 2009. &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.3102\/0002831208323278\">Racial Diversity Matters: The Impact of Diversity-Related Student Engagement and Institutional Context.<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Educational Research Journal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">46<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2): 322-353.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/soc.uic.edu\/sociology\/people\/faculty\/herring\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cedric Herring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. 2009. &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/000312240907400203\">Does Diversity Pay?: Race, Gender, and the Business Case for Diversity<\/a>.&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Sociological Review<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">74<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2): 208-224.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/video\/incoming-white-house-press-secretary-defends-trump-s-cabinet-diversity-858357315969\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">responded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to questions regarding the lack of diversity by stating that this cabinet <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diverse; it has a \u201cdiversity of thinking\u2026diversity of ideology.\u201d \u00a0This is an example of how diversity acts as \u201cHappy Talk,\u201d a way people can show off their affections for modern equality without any attention to existing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inequality<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, many p<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eople talk about \u201cdiversity\u201d in abstract ways, but avoid any real discussion of race, gender, and the like.<\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cla.umn.edu\/about\/directory\/profile\/jmbell\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joyce Bell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cla.umn.edu\/about\/directory\/profile\/hartm021\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Douglas Hartmann<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. 2007. &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/000312240707200603\">Diversity in Everyday Discourse: The Cultural Ambiguities and Consequences of &#8216;Happy Talk&#8217;<\/a>&#8220;<\/span>\u00a0<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Sociological Review<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a072(6): 895-914.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This inattention toward issues of race, gender, sexuality, and other axes of oppression can take the \u201coomph\u201d out of claims to diversity and misses its original intent: increasing access for marginalized groups.
