Satirizing the youths is all in good fun, but when the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/247\/millennials-the-me-me-me-generation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> casts them as \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2015\/06\/23\/know-your-millennial-co-workers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the most high maintenance workforce in the history of the world<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d the shtick can get a little old. So what do we actually know about Millennials? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social scientists look for \u201ccohort trends\u201d\u2014 changes that occur not because individual people are changing their attitudes or behaviors, but because a new generation is coming of age. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/graphicsociology\/2011\/10\/04\/who-is-the-millennial-generation-pew-research\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pew Research data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows the Millennial cohort, born between 1977 and 1992, are less likely to be married than members of other cohorts at the same age, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2015\/05\/12\/millennials-increasingly-are-driving-growth-of-nones\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more likely to be non-religious<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewsocialtrends.org\/2015\/07\/29\/more-millennials-living-with-family-despite-improved-job-market\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more likely to be living<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at home despite an improving economy.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This seems like a contradiction, but social science helps us understand why Millennials seem to be fiercely independent, but also missing key markers of adulthood. The research shows they aren\u2019t just shallow or selfish\u2014they are responding directly to unique social pressures. <\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surveys find the Millennial cohort focuses more on extrinsic goals like achievement and money, and it scores slightly lower on measures of empathy and community concern. We have to put these findings in context, however, because in-depth interviews show many of these beliefs stem from challenges like declining job security, economic inequality, and unreliable social institutions. <\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jeantwenge.com\/\">Jean M. Silva<\/a>. 2014. &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/soc4.12227\/abstract\">Slight Expectations: Making Sense of the &#8216;Me Me Me&#8217; Generation<\/a>.&#8221; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sociology Compass<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 8(12): 1388-1397<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>These extrinsic and individualistic motives mean Millennials are more likely to question existing institutions, and this has benefits.
