One of the best ways I have found to demonstrate the structure\/agency dynamic to students is to have them <a href=\"http:\/\/www.footprintnetwork.org\/en\/index.php\/gfn\/page\/calculators\/\" target=\"_blank\">calculate their ecological footprint<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Formulated by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.footprintnetwork.org\/en\/index.php\/GFN\/page\/our_team\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Mathis Wackernagel\u00a0<\/a>and his team at the Global Footprint Network, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.footprintnetwork.org\/en\/index.php\/gfn\/page\/calculators\/\" target=\"_blank\">this interactive online tool<\/a> allows individuals to enter specific practices of their<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/toolbox\/files\/2013\/07\/Screen-Shot-2013-07-25-at-8.14.59-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-97\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/toolbox\/files\/2013\/07\/Screen-Shot-2013-07-25-at-8.14.59-AM-300x125.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2013-07-25 at 8.14.59 AM\" width=\"300\" height=\"125\" \/><\/a> individual consumption such as: the quantity of meat in their diet, the proximity of the sources of their food, the amount of trash they generate, frequency of purchasing clothing and household goods, size of residence, and modes of transportation. There are two options for reporting individual characteristics and I require my students to do the more specific reporting method.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Upon completing the dozen or so questions, the website calculates the number of planets it would <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/toolbox\/files\/2013\/07\/Screen-Shot-2013-07-25-at-8.15.14-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-96\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/toolbox\/files\/2013\/07\/Screen-Shot-2013-07-25-at-8.15.14-AM-300x171.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2013-07-25 at 8.15.14 AM\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" \/><\/a>take for the individual\u2019s consumption to be aligned with the generative bio-capacity of the earth. For Americans this is almost always in the range of 5 or 6 planets and of course we only have one.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-102\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/toolbox\/files\/2013\/07\/Screen-Shot-2013-07-25-at-8.21.38-AM-300x174.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2013-07-25 at 8.21.38 AM\" width=\"300\" height=\"174\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Additional tools allow for the exploration of reducing your overall footprint.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714;font-size: 1rem\"><br \/>\nAs usual, I try to utilize resources in the classroom that have an explanation of their methods and data.
