{"id":1740,"date":"2016-08-08T14:28:06","date_gmt":"2016-08-08T20:28:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/toolbox\/?p=1740"},"modified":"2016-09-08T12:40:17","modified_gmt":"2016-09-08T18:40:17","slug":"2016-police-lethal-force-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/toolbox\/2016-police-lethal-force-data\/","title":{"rendered":"TEACHING EXCEL BASICS WITH 2016 POLICE LETHAL FORCE DATA: A resource for methods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Teaching quantitative methods and data analysis can be tedious, but I have found\u00a0that using sociological and &#8220;headline-relevant&#8221; data, such as the 2016 data on police use of lethal force can increase the engagement and learning of our students. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/ng-interactive\/2015\/jun\/01\/the-counted-police-killings-us-database\" target=\"_blank\">The Guardian<\/a> newspaper has been keeping tracking of US citizens shot by police since the beginning of 2015. The annual data is downloadable and a great free dataset for teaching not only on the topic of race and the use of lethal force by police, but also Excel and SPSS data analysis. Here I provide a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/8tddj9fo0qw7jnc\/The%20Counted%20as%20of%20August%202nd%202016.xlsx?dl=0\" target=\"_blank\">downloadable data set<\/a> for 2016 (up to August 2nd) and an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/4ls4tw9rf2s83a2\/Teaching%20Excel%20using%20police%20lethal%20force%20data.docx?dl=0\" target=\"_blank\">introductory Excel assignment<\/a> (one I use on the first day of lab before moving onto SPSS).<\/p>\n<p>The learning goals of the exercise include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Become familiar with select elements of Microsoft Excel<\/li>\n<li>Learn how to create sortable tables<\/li>\n<li>Generate professional bar and pie charts using data<\/li>\n<li>Generate averages using Excel<\/li>\n<li>Use the \u201ccountif\u201d command<\/li>\n<li>Use Excel math functions to calculate percentages<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Feel free to adopt or\u00a0adapt the assignment\u00a0to the needs of your own class.
