{"id":968,"date":"2009-04-14T06:13:28","date_gmt":"2009-04-14T11:13:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/?p=968"},"modified":"2009-04-14T06:50:54","modified_gmt":"2009-04-14T11:50:54","slug":"oh-twitter-what-will-become-of-our-language","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/2009\/04\/14\/oh-twitter-what-will-become-of-our-language\/","title":{"rendered":"Oh, Twitter, What Will Become of Our Language?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, as we become &#8220;scanners&#8221; of content in this Web 2.0 world, what will happen to language? \u00a0As we use <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SMS\">SMS<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Twitter\">Twitter<\/a><\/strong>, bound by 140 characters, will the use of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/haxor\">h@x0r<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leet\">L33t-<\/a><\/strong>style words go beyond these contexts and into other modes of\u00a0communications {such as e-mails and reports}? \u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_971\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-971\" style=\"width: 368px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-971\" title=\"maria_bartiromo_cnbc\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/04\/maria_bartiromo_cnbc.jpg\" alt=\"Maria Bartiromo-CNBC &amp; Tickers\" width=\"368\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/04\/maria_bartiromo_cnbc.jpg 368w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/04\/maria_bartiromo_cnbc-100x75.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-971\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maria Bartiromo-CNBC &amp; Tickers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Already, there&#8217;s a shorthand one needs to &#8220;decode&#8221; on the TV tickers for news, finance {above}, weather, and sports. \u00a0Will technology reduce our written language to a lowest-common denominator? \u00a0Will a linguistic <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0387808\/\">Idiocracy<\/a><\/strong> set in, where those with good written communication skills die off, leaving the rest of us thumbing abbreviations and smileys on handhelds :-P?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"400\" height=\"345\" data=\"http:\/\/www.metacafe.com\/fplayer\/2682654\/idiocracy_opening_sequence.swf\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\"><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.metacafe.com\/fplayer\/2682654\/idiocracy_opening_sequence.swf\" \/><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, are we losing our capacity to read, in an &#8220;educated&#8221; citizen of society sense? \u00a0Linguist, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www1.american.edu\/tesol\/baronhome.htm\">Naomi Baron\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>studies technology as it relates to the evolution of language. \u00a0She warns of the implications of this and offered this observation in a 2005 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www1.american.edu\/tesol\/Scholarly%20Documents,%20Articles,%20Research\/Naomi%20Baron\/Killing%20the%20Word%20by%20Snippets.pdf\">LA Times article<\/a><\/strong>::<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Has written culture recently taken a nose drive? These are the students who grew up on Spark Notes, the popular study guides. Many of this generation are <strong><em>aliterate<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 <strong>they know how to read but don&#8217;t choose to<\/strong>. And abridgment of texts is now taken to extremes, with episodes from micro-novels being sent as text messages on cell phones&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Will effortless random access erode our collective respect for writing as a logical, linear process? Such respect matters because it undergirds modern education, which is premised on thought, evidence and analysis rather than memorization and dogma. Reading successive pages and chapters teaches us how to follow a sustained line of reasoning.<\/p>\n<p>If we approach the written word primarily through search-and-seizure rather than sustained encounter-and-contemplation, we risk losing a critical element of what it means to be an educated, literate society.\u00a0&#8220;&#8211;&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www1.american.edu\/tesol\/Scholarly%20Documents,%20Articles,%20Research\/Naomi%20Baron\/Killing%20the%20Word%20by%20Snippets.pdf\">Killing the written word by snippets<\/a>&#8221; (11\/28\/05) {Emphasis added}<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What about those emoticons? \u00a0Used to clarify meanings in text-based environments, are these shorthand shortcuts impoverishing our language? \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-970\" title=\"emotibastards\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/04\/emotibastards.jpg\" alt=\"emotibastards\" width=\"109\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/04\/emotibastards.jpg 109w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/04\/emotibastards-61x100.jpg 61w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 109px) 100vw, 109px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Or, are they just transforming how we communicate? \u00a0For example, you can be as blunt or brutal as possible, but if you follow it with a wink or a &#8220;smiley,&#8221; it plants tongue firmly in cheek. \u00a0You get your digs in, but soften the blow. \u00a0Is this playing in to the development of a passive-aggressive culture or at least a passive-aggressive written culture? \u00a0F*** you! \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>So, in order to be understood, will be be relying more and more on communication shortcuts {text shorthand, graphics, and\/or even <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/rhizomicomm.blogspot.com\/2009\/04\/twittersolving-and-my-quest-to-blog.html\">sound<\/a><\/strong>} not just in SMS texting and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Micro-blogging\">microblogging<\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tweet\"> Tweets<\/a><\/strong>, but in other forms of everyday communication? \u00a0I&#8217;ve seen people get frustrated with others because their irony or sarcasm wasn&#8217;t coming through. \u00a0Allow me to reintroduce the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Irony_mark\">irony mark<\/a><\/strong>, which has been around since the late 1800s::<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_969\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-969\" style=\"width: 238px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-969\" title=\"point_dironie_brahm\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/04\/point_dironie_brahm.png\" alt=\"point_dironie_brahm\" width=\"238\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/04\/point_dironie_brahm.png 238w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/04\/point_dironie_brahm-100x68.png 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-969\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Irony Mark\/Point d&#39;ironie <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Just in case someone might be overly-literal and might not get the fact that you&#8217;re being <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/snarky\">snarky<\/a><\/strong>, your bases are covered. \u00a0Looking back on Baron&#8217;s quote, the big question for me has to do with the thinking process. \u00a0I linger on terms like &#8220;logical&#8221; and &#8220;linear,&#8221; as I wonder how much of our communications are moving towards the &#8220;emotional&#8221; and &#8220;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hypertext\">hypertextual<\/a><\/strong>.&#8221; \u00a0The emoticon {or other shorthand symbol} and a jumbled mass of linked stream-of-consciousness utterances may be where we&#8217;re heading. \u00a0I think the thought processes may be increasingly non-linear for more and more people and logic is taking a back seat to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Perlocutionary_act\">perlocutionary acts<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that try to elicit a response or some kind of action\/reaction from others. \u00a0This sounds a lot like advertising. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I offer this. \u00a0Will everyday communication be a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pastiche\">pastiche<\/a><\/strong> of a myriad of verbal\/visual snippets? \u00a0We scan through incredible amounts of information and gain meaning from &#8220;decoding&#8221; communications and constructing <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/gestalts\">gestalts.<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0The<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>linear thought process of decoding and encoding meanings is subsumed by thought processes that <em>cut and mix<\/em> ideas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Using Twitter as an example, take this Tweet by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/cshirky\">Clay Shirky<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-972\" title=\"shirkytweet\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/04\/shirkytweet-400x90.jpg\" alt=\"shirkytweet\" width=\"400\" height=\"90\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/04\/shirkytweet-400x90.jpg 400w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/04\/shirkytweet-100x22.jpg 100w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/04\/shirkytweet.jpg 712w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In under 140 characters he communicates several key points and offers a hyperlink to the source, but without proper sentence structure. \u00a0Nevertheless, we can get meaning from his Tweet:: \u00a0(1) 3% of newspaper reading is done online, (2) cite of\u00a0blog post on newspaper impressions for print\/online, (3) assumption is that readers see 1\/2 of the pages, (4) another assumption is that they read all articles, &amp; (5) Clay&#8217;s quick analysis. \u00a0We combine this information with other information {<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bricolage\">bricolage<\/a>} for whatever purpose at hand. \u00a0We can use web searches to get this information, \u00a0On Twitter, we can look for other information on &#8220;newspapers,&#8221; using the hashtag:: <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/timeline\/home#search?q=%23newspapers\">#newspapers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-974\" title=\"newspaperhashtag1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/04\/newspaperhashtag1-400x363.jpg\" alt=\"newspaperhashtag1\" width=\"400\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/04\/newspaperhashtag1-400x363.jpg 400w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/04\/newspaperhashtag1-100x90.jpg 100w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/04\/newspaperhashtag1.jpg 744w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Walter Ong in his <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/0415281296?&amp;PID=30700\">Orality &amp; Literacy <\/a><\/strong>(1982) makes the distinctions between orality {spoken word} and literacy {print}. \u00a0Part of me feels that SMS\/texting and microblogging {Facebook <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Facebook_features#Wall\">&#8220;graffiti&#8221;<\/a><\/strong> &amp; Tweeting} represent a hybrid mode, betwixt and between both orality and literacy. \u00a0Literacy is assumed, but communications are taking on more of the characteristics of the spoken word. \u00a0<strong>So, where is all of this heading? <\/strong>\u00a0We will communicate in ways where we try to be understood, given the technological and temporal parameters. \u00a0I think this will be increasingly distilled. \u00a0The technology will evolve towards allowing people to <em>cut and mix<\/em> text, images, multimedia, sound, <em>etc<\/em>. \u00a0Our use of language and how language enters our consciousness will evolve into new patterns.<\/p>\n<p>These are musings and I welcome rebuttals. \u00a0If you use harsh language, I&#8217;d prefer you soften the blow with an emoticon or two. \u00a0\ud83d\ude09 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So, as we become &#8220;scanners&#8221; of content in this Web 2.0 world, what will happen to language?
