{"id":588,"date":"2009-02-18T20:44:30","date_gmt":"2009-02-19T01:44:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/?p=588"},"modified":"2009-02-18T20:44:30","modified_gmt":"2009-02-19T01:44:30","slug":"privatized-public-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/2009\/02\/18\/privatized-public-space\/","title":{"rendered":"Privatized Public Space"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-589\" title=\"facebook-cartoon\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/02\/facebook-cartoon-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"facebook-cartoon\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/02\/facebook-cartoon-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/02\/facebook-cartoon-100x75.jpg 100w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/02\/facebook-cartoon.jpg 526w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>Many of us post to Facebook, perhaps unaware of what can happen to that content and who has rights to it. \u00a0All of this came to a head a few days ago, as Facebook&#8217;s new terms of service (TOS) came to light and were met with a range of reactions from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciam.com\/blog\/60-second-science\/post.cfm?id=debate-over-who-owns-your-facebook-2009-02-17\">dismay to outrage<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been reading\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=RlRVNikT06YC&amp;dq=convergence+culture&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=bn&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=4KacSf_nJYzQMezThI0F&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;resnum=5&amp;ct=result\">Convergence Culture<\/a>\u00a0and being in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jane_Jacobs\">Jane Jacob&#8217;s<\/a> adopted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/\">home<\/a>, I couldn&#8217;t help but think of how the social space of Facebook relates to how social interactions are shaped by governance and polity in online\u00a0realms, as well as the idea of a commons that is a privatized space, as opposed to a public one.<\/p>\n<p>While I&#8217;m resigned to the fact that there is no privacy online and I don&#8217;t know whether to laugh or cry when I hear that Facebook is being used by collections departments to locate unstealthy credit defaulters (true story), I do bristle at the idea of content being appropriated by companies hosting these web commons.<\/p>\n<p>Why? \u00a0I&#8217;m using the private space of Facebook, why should I feel that what I post is still my intellectual property? \u00a0Am I being unreasonable? \u00a0After all, I push the boundaries of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fair_use\">fair use<\/a>\u00a0quite a bit.<\/p>\n<p>Can social network sites really be sites of democratic action, when they can ultimately be censored, not as a matter of public policy, but rather corporate TOS?
