{"id":3844,"date":"2011-10-15T00:23:19","date_gmt":"2011-10-15T05:23:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/?p=3844"},"modified":"2011-10-15T00:26:55","modified_gmt":"2011-10-15T05:26:55","slug":"3844","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/2011\/10\/15\/3844\/","title":{"rendered":"The Onion News Network and Ironic Public Discourse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have a new article out in <em>Communication Quarterly<\/em> on the <em>Onion News Network<\/em>: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/01463373.2011.615690\" target=\"_blank\">Crafting Hyperreal Spaces for Comic Insights: The <em>Onion News Network\u2019s<\/em> Ironic Iconicity<\/a>.\u201d I&#8217;ve been an admirer of <em>ONN\u2019s<\/em> humor for quite a while, but also believe the inundation of comic discourses that have emerged in\u00a0American political communication since the 1990s has been relatively undertheorized.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, we need a better vocabulary for teasing out the operations and functions of these evolving comic formats, which I argue give us a great deal of insight into contemporary public discourse in the larger mediascape\u2014and tell us about what forms of communication<br \/>\nare most amenable to democratic possibilities in the future. This article describes an innovative hyperreal, socio-political technique called \u201cironic iconicity,\u201d which differentiates the communication strategies of <em>ONN<\/em> from other formats such as <em>The Daily Show<\/em>.
