{"id":383,"date":"2008-11-29T01:53:10","date_gmt":"2008-11-29T06:53:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/?p=383"},"modified":"2008-11-29T02:34:21","modified_gmt":"2008-11-29T07:34:21","slug":"wikitransparency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/2008\/11\/29\/wikitransparency\/","title":{"rendered":"WikiTransparency?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_382\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-382\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2008\/11\/500px-wikipedia-lolcat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-382\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2008\/11\/500px-wikipedia-lolcat-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Lolcat\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-382\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lolcat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Earlier, I referenced this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/politics\/onlinerights\/news\/2007\/08\/wiki_tracker\">Wired article<\/a> from last year on <a href=\"http:\/\/wikiscanner.virgil.gr\/\" target=\"_self\">WikipediaScanner<\/a>. \u00a0The site tracks edits of Wikipedia entries to known IP addresses within firms and organizations. \u00a0Wired has <a href=\"http:\/\/wired.reddit.com\/wikidgame\/?s=top\">compiled a list<\/a> of notable &#8220;salacious&#8221; edits from the past. \u00a0Here&#8217;s a news story discussing the PR and search engine optimization (SEO) implications of WikipediaScanner.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"400\" height=\"345\"><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.metacafe.com\/fplayer\/1109401\/vandalism_and_wikipedia.swf\" \/><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\" \/><\/object><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: xx-small\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.metacafe.com\/watch\/1109401\/vandalism_and_wikipedia\/\">Vandalism And Wikipedia<\/a> &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While most edits are innocuous, some raise eyebrows. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m interested in this because I feel that transparency will be increasingly important as Web 2.0 develops and we shift to 3.0, 4.0, etc. \u00a0Some of the things I&#8217;m working on is the implications of anonymity in social media and how it relates to business\/organizational practice. \u00a0Some issues that aren&#8217;t well defined are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Policies regarding transparency versus secrecy (open source versus <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/techbiz\/it\/magazine\/16-04\/bz_apple\">Apple<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Managing public perceptions and organizational attitudes towards risk<\/li>\n<li>What are the proper features\/applets (materialities of communication) that foster &#8220;collaboration and community&#8221; across different contexts? \u00a0Should these be staged?<\/li>\n<li>What are the preconditions for online communities be self-regulating?<\/li>\n<li>Nuances of online community culture self-reproduction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While anonymity and fluid identity was prevalent in Web 1.0, back when nobody knew you were a dog:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2008\/11\/doginternet_075.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-384\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2008\/11\/doginternet_075-268x300.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>in Web 2.0, users are seeking the experiences of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theshiftedlibrarian.com\/archives\/2005\/11\/07\/digital_utes.html\">4Cs<\/a>:\u00a0conversation, community, commons, and collaboration. \u00a0I think in many instances that transparency facilitates the 4Cs through building social capital and trust. \u00a0Additionally,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Communitas\">communitas<\/a><\/em> and shared meaning systems, as well as the materialities of communications (applets, features, etc.), also foster\/enable the experiences\/practices in the 4Cs, but I don&#8217;t think all of these are invariant preconditions in all contexts. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What are your thoughts on transparency?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 Earlier, I referenced this Wired article from last year on WikipediaScanner. \u00a0The site tracks edits of Wikipedia entries to known IP addresses within firms and organizations. \u00a0Wired has compiled a list of notable &#8220;salacious&#8221; edits from the past. \u00a0Here&#8217;s a news story discussing the PR and search engine optimization (SEO) implications of WikipediaScanner.
