{"id":356,"date":"2008-11-14T02:09:22","date_gmt":"2008-11-14T07:09:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/?p=356"},"modified":"2008-11-14T02:11:35","modified_gmt":"2008-11-14T07:11:35","slug":"exit-poll-meth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/2008\/11\/14\/exit-poll-meth\/","title":{"rendered":"Exit Poll Meth?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In order to take the edge off of my poll watching withdrawal, I&#8217;ve gone back to one of my favorite poll-meth (I would be dating myself to call it crack?) dealers&#8230; Nate Silver&#8217;s Fivethirtyeight blog has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fivethirtyeight.com\/2008\/11\/few-notes-from-national-exit-poll.html\">nice breakdown<\/a> of Obama&#8217;s performance among a range of demographic groups compared to Kerry in 2004.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/baseballprospectus.com\/images\/exit.png\" alt=\"obama 08 vs. kerry 04\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Obama outperformed Kerry in every demographic except seniors, gays and lesbians and &#8220;other&#8221; religions.  What&#8217;s most astounding is the breadth of his gains.  He made gains among liberals, moderates and conservatives.  Which begs a question we discussed in our thick culture podcast today (coming soon!) &#8212; do campaigns even matter?  Did the lousy economy and unpopularity of President Bush preordain a Republican victory this year?
