Kennedy, where the mascot was a leprechaun and the nickname for the sports teams was the Fighting Irish. \u00a0The &#8220;branding&#8221; and the fight song were all University of Notre Dame ripoffs. \u00a0I also seem to recall some Boston Celtics influence on the logo front. \u00a0I never thought about it being offensive.<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward a few years when in my consumer behaviour course {text was by William Wilkie}, I read about the policy implications of sports marketing, particularly when it came to using Native American tribes as mascots. \u00a0This week, the decision of whether the current nickname for the University of North Dakota will continue to be The Fighting Sioux was extended for 30-60 days by the North Dakota state Board of Higher Education. \u00a0This will allow the university to get the opinion of the the state&#8217;s two tribes, as per the NCAA mandate that says that they cannot hold postseason events without approval of the tribes, after deeming the nickname &#8220;hostile and offensive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Proponents say the name honors the tribes and are an important part of the school&#8217;s tradition. \u00a0On ESPN, a university official did everything possible to state the university position is whatever the tribes and the Board of Higher Education decides, while an activist stated that all tribes in all states where Sioux people reside should have a say.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1857\" title=\"stanford tree\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/10\/stanford-tree-63x100.jpg\" alt=\"stanford tree\" width=\"63\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/10\/stanford-tree-63x100.jpg 63w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/10\/stanford-tree.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 63px) 100vw, 63px\" \/>The Stanford {Leland Stanford Jr. University} nickname was the Indians until 1972, when, after protest, it was changed to the Cardinal, for the colour, not the bird. \u00a0The mascot went from Prince Lightfoot to the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stanford_Tree\">Stanford Tree<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">, but not overnight.<\/span> <\/strong> The tree\u00a0was a mascot candidate offered by the Stanford band in 1975, although it did not win a student\u00a0referendum that allowed suggestions that year. \u00a0According to Wikipedia::<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The 1975 vote included new suggestions, many alluding to the industry of the school&#8217;s founder, railroad\u00a0<a style=\"text-decoration: none;color: #002bb8;background-color: initial\" title=\"Tycoon\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tycoon\">tycoon<\/a> <a style=\"text-decoration: none;color: #002bb8;background-color: initial\" title=\"Leland Stanford\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leland_Stanford\">Leland Stanford<\/a> \u2014 the\u00a0<a style=\"text-decoration: none;color: #002bb8;background-color: initial\" title=\"Robber baron (industrialist)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robber_baron_(industrialist)\">Robber Barons<\/a>, the Sequoias, the Trees, the Cardinals, the Railroaders, the Spikes, and the Huns.
