{"id":176,"date":"2008-10-03T15:27:08","date_gmt":"2008-10-03T20:27:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/?p=176"},"modified":"2008-10-03T15:41:59","modified_gmt":"2008-10-03T20:41:59","slug":"sociology-and-public-policy-at-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/2008\/10\/03\/sociology-and-public-policy-at-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Sociology (and Public Policy) at Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Watching the Palin-Biden debate last night, I had one of those &#8220;a-ha&#8221; moments when a theory&#8217;s power is revealed in real time.\u00a0 For me, this happened as Joe Biden was speaking of aternative energy policy.\u00a0 I was watching CNN&#8217;s coverage of the debate, during which the bottom of the screen flashed the read out of an EKG machine&#8230;err&#8230;I mean&#8230;the collective response from the &#8220;Perception Analyzers&#8221; of three dozen or so undeclared voters in Ohio.\u00a0 When Biden was on about clean coal and global warming, the needle didn&#8217;t move.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.cdn.turner.com\/cnn\/2008\/POLITICS\/10\/03\/biden.palin.analysis\/art.analysis.ap.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t until Biden employed a &#8220;frame bridging&#8221; strategy of connecting clean coal to &#8220;good paying jobs&#8221; that the lines on the monitor shot up into very positive territory.\u00a0\u00a0 Snow and Benford define frame bridging as a &#8220;linkage of two or more ideologically congruent but structurally unconnected frames regarding a particular issue or problem.&#8221; (467).
