{"id":1411,"date":"2009-06-30T10:08:35","date_gmt":"2009-06-30T15:08:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/?p=1411"},"modified":"2009-06-30T20:09:23","modified_gmt":"2009-07-01T01:09:23","slug":"globalization-nation-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/2009\/06\/30\/globalization-nation-media\/","title":{"rendered":"Globalization, Nation, &amp; Media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/06\/155054917001lzzzzzzz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1412 aligncenter\" title=\"155054917001lzzzzzzz\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/06\/155054917001lzzzzzzz.jpg\" alt=\"Cover of Douglas Coupland's Souvenirs of Canada\" width=\"298\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/06\/155054917001lzzzzzzz.jpg 425w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/06\/155054917001lzzzzzzz-89x100.jpg 89w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/thickculture\/files\/2009\/06\/155054917001lzzzzzzz-357x400.jpg 357w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 298px) 100vw, 298px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Notes from North of 49\u00baN<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-style: normal\">I&#8217;ve been thinking more and more about the concept of nation, of late. \u00a0In summers past, the 4th. of July, Independence Day in the United States, meant being in northern California and perhaps heading to Point Reyes and seeing the tug-of-war between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diddit.com\/festival-fjqzfg\/north-coast-california-weird-events\/bolinas-stinson-beach-tug-of-war\/\"><strong>Bolinas and Stinson Beach<\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0The past three years, I have observed\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canada_Day\">Canada Day<\/a><\/strong>, celebrating when Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Qu\u00e9bec, and Ontario became a federation, a dominion with ties to the UK. \u00a0Two adjacent countries, which appear to have similarities, but have key differences. \u00a0Population is one differentiator. At confederation in 1867, the US population was around over 10 times that of Canada,\u00a038,558,371 to\u00a03,625,000 {1870}. \u00a0The twentieth century would see the rise of American dominance, not only in terms of economics, but also in terms of media and culture.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-style: normal\">American culture is readily evident in Canada. \u00a0On television and in major cities like Toronto, with the prevalence of brands like Starbuck&#8217;s, McDonald&#8217;s, and Subway. \u00a0A quick scan of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/tvlistings.zap2it.com\/tvlistings\/ZCGrid.do?method=decideFwdForLineup&amp;zipcode=m4y1l6&amp;setMyPreference=false&amp;lineupId=0005580:-\"><strong>the TV listings<\/strong><\/a> shows how popular US television content is in anglophone Canada. \u00a0Canada is aware of this and requires broadcasters to show\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Can_con\">Canadian content<\/a><\/strong> {Can con}. \u00a0The CBC, the\u00a0Canadian national public broadcaster, is a flagship network of the nation,\u00a0where, through its <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canadian_Broadcasting_Corporation#Mandate\">mandate<\/a><\/strong>, the network&#8217;s goal is to be a cultural touchstone for the nation. \u00a0I&#8217;ve blogged about <strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">the future of the CBC television on this post::<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/rhizomicomm.blogspot.com\/2009\/06\/will-globalization-kill-or-make-cbc.html\">Will Globalization Kill or Make the CBC Relevant Again?<\/a>, <\/strong>which touches on how the CBC is struggling to remain viable and relevant in the shadow of big media players in the United States and fending off challengers within Canada. \u00a0Unlike the BBC, Britain&#8217;s national broadcaster, which is funded through <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Television_licence#United_Kingdom\">household television licences<\/a><\/strong>, the CBC gets funding from the government, but also is subject to market forces through selling ad time, both sources being historically uneven.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The question I have is whether the role of a national broadcaster is even important. \u00a0I don&#8217;t see the United States as having the equivalent of the CBC, let alone the BBC. \u00a0PBS and NPR are, in my opinion, a loose confederation of programming, as opposed to a network with a strong identity, let alone an entity fostering a conceptualization of the United States as a culture or a nation.<\/p>\n<p>The ideas of Arjun Appadurai and Benedict Anderson come to mind. \u00a0Appadurai speaks of globalization in terms of flows. \u00a0Flows of finance, ideologies, technologies, people and media, each with the suffix <em>scapes<\/em>. \u00a0Mediascapes have two components::<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The flows of capacity to produce and disseminate electronic information<\/li>\n<li>The images of the world created by these media<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Benedict Anderson&#8217;s <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=4mmoZFtCpuoC&amp;dq=imagined+communities&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=bn&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=GAlKSpONNJGNtgeq7ryMCg&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=4\">Imagined Communities<\/a><\/strong><\/em> <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Imagined_Communities\">discusses nation<\/a><\/strong> as an abstract entity, where meaning is shared within and the mass media address its citizens as a public.<\/p>\n<p>Borders are often permeable under globalization and Canada has seen flows of media flood across its southern border, but what has this done to Canadians&#8217; notion of nation? \u00a0Can Canadian content policy and the CBC help to reinforce the imagined community of Canada? \u00a0Does nation even matter? \u00a0Is Canada to Canadians<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancouversun.com\/news\/Canada+home+disparate+land\/1745788\/story.html\"> &#8220;our home and disparate land,&#8221;<\/a><\/strong> as stated in today&#8217;s Vancouver Sun? \u00a0What about shared Canadian experiences such as <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hww.ca\/index_e.asp\">Hinterland&#8217;s Who&#8217;s Who<\/a><\/strong>::<br \/>\n<object width=\"425\" height=\"344\" data=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/H-aoWSpFor0&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/H-aoWSpFor0&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>I think we need to remember that the context here is capitalism. \u00a0Media is flowing, media full of American meanings and ideals, as entertainment content to generate revenues. \u00a0In light of this onslaught, I think it is important for Canada to preserve its identity by creating content that increases Canadian cultural knowledge and awareness. \u00a0Why?
