Harper LOLcat from Cartoon Life<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Notes from north of 49\u00baN<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I remember how my parents said that <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RFK\">RFK<\/a><\/strong> was accused of being a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carpetbagger\">carpetbagger<\/a><\/strong>, coming to New York to become a US Senator in 1964. \u00a0Now that <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stephen_Harper\">Stephen Harper<\/a><\/strong>, Prime Minister of Canada, finds his Conservative Party <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upi.com\/Top_News\/2009\/05\/12\/Poll-Conservatives-slip-in-Quebec\/UPI-77461242151665\/\">down in the polls<\/a><\/strong> by 5% {35-30%}, attack ads are being run tantamount to accusing the Liberal Party leader, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_Ignatieff\">Michael Ignatieff<\/a><\/strong>, of being a Canadian &#8220;outsider.&#8221; \u00a0The ads accuse Ignatieff of coming back to Canada after being gone for 34 years::<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"425\" height=\"344\" data=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/0aiGNvhgv9s&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/0aiGNvhgv9s&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>The Conservatives are really slipping in the polls in Qu\u00e9bec, so you think they would come up with a more engaging attack ad than <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SAlOsbXsw4Q\">this one in French<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This one paints Ignatieff as a carpetbagging opportunist, living in the UK and referring to himself as American::<br \/>\n<object width=\"425\" height=\"344\" data=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/2BVoT-1B3Os&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/2BVoT-1B3Os&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>The Liberals may be further <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.montrealgazette.com\/news\/Bloc+gearing+attack+Ignatieff+during+next+election\/1574716\/story.html\">undermined by attacks from the Bloc Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois<\/a><\/strong> in Qu\u00e9bec, which has 24% of the population in Canada. \u00a0Support for the Bloc is upwards of 40% in Qu\u00e9bec, while Liberal support in the province is around 35%.<\/p>\n<p>I find the anglophone ads to be rather effective at conveying the frame of Ignatieff as a elitist outsider. \u00a0I agree with the pundits that Harper is fighting for his political life and managed to get into a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.macleans.ca\/2009\/04\/21\/the-feud\/\">feud with Brian Mulroney<\/a><\/strong>, a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brian_Mulroney\">conservative blast from the past<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0Conservatism seems to be lacking cohesiveness on both sides of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/49th_parallel_north\">49\u00baN<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>While <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalpost.com\/news\/story.html?id=1562197\">another Federal election is unlikely in the near term<\/a><\/strong>, it&#8217;s likely to pressure uneasy alliances between the Conservatives, the Bloc, and even the left-leaning NDP {read:: concessions by Harper?}.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HatTip::<\/strong> LinnyQat<\/p>\n<p><strong>Twitterversion::<\/strong> Harper {Tories} attcks Ignatieff {Grits} on nationalism frame.
