{"id":542,"date":"2010-11-18T04:33:08","date_gmt":"2010-11-18T09:33:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/teaching\/?p=542"},"modified":"2011-11-07T15:01:09","modified_gmt":"2011-11-07T20:01:09","slug":"remembering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/teaching\/2010\/11\/18\/remembering\/","title":{"rendered":"Remembering"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"img-link\" title=\"Creative Commons licensed photo by Rafa http:\/\/www.micamara.es on flickr.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/25792423@N00\/5030849592\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4088\/5030849592_93eb5047cd_m.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Parque Tsitsernakaberd memorial genocidio armenio Yerevan Armenia 05\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nMemories of the past are fluid and powerful.\u00a0 They are influenced by the present and can simultaneously influence the present.\u00a0\u00a0Memories can be manipulated to serve interests and often provide blueprints for social action.\u00a0 In the Summer 2010 issue of <em>Contexts<\/em>, two pieces capture these and other nuances of memory.<\/p>\n<p>Barbara Sutton\u2019s photo essay on \u201cSituating Memory in Argentina\u201d highlights pictures of the military dictatorship that disappeared, tortured, and violated the human rights of the people of Argentina.\u00a0 Robin Autry\u2019s piece, entitled \u201cMemory, Materiality, and the Apartheid Past,\u201d examines processes of constructing memories in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>These readings could be paired together or could easily be paired with a chapter from Jeffrey Alexander et. al\u2019s \u00a0book on <em>Cultural Trauma and Collective Identity, <\/em>which explores the relationship between collective memory, identity, and trauma.<\/p>\n<p>For an assignment, students could research sites of memory and bring pictures and a historical description of the site to share with a group.<\/p>\n<p>Potential discussion questions include:<\/p>\n<p>How can a memory be shared?\u00a0 Do you have to experience something in order to have a memory of it?<\/p>\n<p>Do you think collective memory has the ability to deter future atrocities and human rights violations?\u00a0 Why or why not?<\/p>\n<p>The notion of collective memory often insinuates that a dominant memory exists.\u00a0 However, Autry\u2019s piece notes that resources and opportunity also play\u00a0a role in which memory prevails.\u00a0 Discuss how power can affect collective memory.<\/p>\n<p>How do you view the U.S. treatment of Native Americans, Abraham Lincoln, or more recent events like September 11th?\u00a0 What factors influence these memories and beliefs about the past?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Memories of the past are fluid and powerful.\u00a0 They are influenced by the present and can simultaneously influence the present.\u00a0\u00a0Memories can be manipulated to serve interests and often provide blueprints for social action.\u00a0 In the Summer 2010 issue of Contexts, two pieces capture these and other nuances of memory.
