This assignment asks students to watch a few episodes of <strong><em>America&#8217;s Next Top Model <\/em><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">after reading an interesting and accessible culture review from <em>Contexts. <\/em>There are many elements in ANTM worth sociological examination: race, gender, and sexuality of contestants and judges, gender performance, use and display of bodies, modeling culture, body image, patriarchal power, infantilizing women, feminism, self-branding and individualized success ideals.\u00a0<em> <\/em>You could even ask students to send you clips of segments they found especially provocative and show some of them in class to spark the discussion. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4057\/5078970513_e839042f7d_m.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"CS\" \/><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Read the culture review <strong>&#8220;The Top Model Life&#8221; <\/strong>by Elizabeth Wissinger\u00a0featured in\u00a0<em>Contexts<\/em> magazine&#8217;s Spring 2010 issue.<\/p>\n<p>Then, watch an episode (or a few) of America&#8217;s Next Top Model online.<\/p>\n<p>Full episodes found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cwtv.com\/cw-video\/americas-next-top-model\/.\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We all love to hate reality TV.
