{"id":212,"date":"2010-03-18T12:59:52","date_gmt":"2010-03-18T17:59:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/teaching\/?p=212"},"modified":"2011-11-07T15:18:56","modified_gmt":"2011-11-07T20:18:56","slug":"soda-cola","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/teaching\/2010\/03\/18\/soda-cola\/","title":{"rendered":"Soda Cola"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here is a <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/teaching\/files\/2010\/02\/Soda-Cola.pdf\">case study<\/a> that you can use before reading <strong>\u201cConsumers with a Conscience: Will They Pay More?\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0 by Howard Kimeldorf, Rachel Meyer, Monica Prasad, and Ian Robinson (<em>Contexts, <\/em>\u00a0Winter 2006).\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As a University of Pleasantville Board Member, Mike has a large decision ahead of him.\u00a0 Two years ago, his university signed a 5-year contract with Soda Cola.\u00a0 The university only sells and serves Soda Cola brand beverages on campus, and in return the university receives financial support from Soda Cola for research, new buildings, and student activities.<\/p>\n<p>However, a group of several hundred students on campus have prepared a petition that asks the university to switch soda venders on the basis of alleged human rights violations by Soda Cola in other countries.\u00a0 In some countries, Soda Cola companies have been accused of having unsafe working conditions.\u00a0 In other countries, Soda Cola has also been accused of damaging the environment and contributing to pollution in rivers that\u00a0people rely on for drinking water.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Mike understands these students\u2019 concerns, he also has to consider his obligations to the university.\u00a0 Times are tough, and the money the university receives from Soda Cola goes toward education and research.\u00a0 Furthermore, he wonders if other soda vendors have better human rights records.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Either way, the Board of Directors of the university will be reviewing the petition; and Mike will have to express his opinion on whether or not the university should continue business with Soda Cola.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Discussion Questions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If you were Mike, what would you suggest that the Board do?<\/li>\n<li>If the university ends their contract with Soda Cola, they will lose a substantial amount of research and education funding from the company.
