explains, &#8220;The Recession Trends initiative, a collaboration between the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.russellsage.org\/\">Russell Sage Foundation<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stanford.edu\/group\/scspi\/\">Center on Poverty and Inequality<\/a>, is dedicated to monitoring the social and economic fallout of the ongoing downturn.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There are many ways you could use this informative website in the classroom. \u00a0For example, you could ask students to form a research question about the recession (e.g., Did crime rates rise during the recession?) and use the website to help answer it.\u00a0 Specifically, the website includes a graphing utility with data on each of the 16 domains covered regarding the recession (housing, poverty, immigration, crime, health, etc.). \u00a0The graphing utility is found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanford.edu\/group\/recessiontrends\/cgi-bin\/web\/trend-data\">here<\/a>, and the domains are listed on the right-hand side.\u00a0 Note that students likely would need a few minutes to explore the domains before picking a research question that could be answered using the website.<\/p>\n<p>This could also be paired with the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/officehours\/2012\/05\/09\/david-grusky-on-the-great-recession\/\">Office Hours podcast with David Grusky<\/a>, one of the creators of the website. \u00a0A teaching activity to accompany the podcast, which was posted earlier this year, is below.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In this episode of Office Hours, TSP\u2019s Sarah Shannon speaks with Stanford University Sociology Professor David Grusky about the social and economic effects of the recession.\u00a0 This entire podcast could be assigned to students, though you could also considering assigning part of it (the first 20 minutes, for example).<\/p>\n<p>Grusky and Shannon cover many topics in this 50-minute conversation, so there are many avenues for discussion.\u00a0 Here are a few basic questions that cover some of the main points.<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0\u00a0 How does the most recent recession differ from past recessions?\u00a0 In other words, what makes it a \u201cgreat\u201d recession?<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0\u00a0 How does the recession affect inequality in the United States?<\/p>\n<p>3)\u00a0\u00a0 What are some of the responses to the recession, and how do they differ from responses to the Great Depression?<\/p>\n<p>4)\u00a0\u00a0 Why does Grusky see a danger in the focus on tax-based solutions to the current economic problems?<\/p>\n<p>5)\u00a0\u00a0 Grusky and Shannon speak specifically about college students several times throughout the podcast?\u00a0 How is the recession impacting students, and what is the bottleneck that they mention?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We want to take a moment to alert you to a fantastic new teaching tool:\u00a0Recession Trends.\u00a0 As the website&#8217;s &#8220;about us&#8221;
