The latest figures suggest that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/prod\/2011pubs\/acsbr10-05.pdf\">1 in 5 children<\/a> in the United States is living in poverty (it\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/prod\/2012pubs\/acsbr11-01.pdf\">1 in 6 of all people<\/a>). However, when the poor are vilified as lazy moochers the face that is often imagined is not that of a child.<\/p>\n<p>Poor Kids is a fantastic documentary that has come to us just in time. The film is narrated by the children of three families that are struggling to avoid becoming homeless. See more from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/pages\/frontline\/\" target=\"_blank\">FRONTLINE.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a discipline, sociology is great at identifying the structural causes of poverty, but this only covers half of the sociological imagination. <em>Poor Kids<\/em> gives us the experience of the individual and delivers it in a way that neutralizes the \u201cblame the poor\u201d defenses that many of our students have.
