In this series, I&#8217;m going to offer some examples of how people of color are used in ads and some of the conditions under which they are included.<\/p>\n<p>In this first post of the series, I offer you examples of ads that include people of color in order to associate the collectively-held meaning of the racial minority group (i.e., stereotypical traits, the social construction of the group) with the product.<\/p>\n<p>This first one is my favorite (thanks to my student Kelly for submitting it).\u00a0 The product is Dole Fruit Gel Bowls.\u00a0 The text is: &#8220;There&#8217;s a feeling you get from the refreshing taste of real fruit.\u00a0 Lighten up with <em>Reduced Sugar<\/em> flavors.\u00a0 Life Is Sweet.&#8221;\u00a0 So how do they convince us that &#8220;Fruit Gel&#8221; is &#8220;real fruit&#8221;?\u00a0 By putting a &#8220;native&#8221; appearing woman with a\u00a0&#8220;natural&#8221; hairstyle\u00a0in a white cotton frock with flowers around her neck.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/race-meaning-nature-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-982 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/race-meaning-nature-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"653\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this ad (thanks to my student, Jennifer, for submitting it) Verizon Broadband is telling us that we can download music fast.\u00a0 What kind of music?\u00a0 The kind associated with black folks, of course.\u00a0 The text along the top reads: &#8220;Jazz. Rock. Trip Hop. Uptempo or down.&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/race-27.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/race-meaning-3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-981 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/race-meaning-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"499\" height=\"672\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Compare that version of the ad with this one (thanks to my student, Laura).\u00a0 In this ad, the person is now an Asian woman and the type of music mentioned is &#8220;Classical. Soul. Hip Hop.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/race-meaning-2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-980 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/race-meaning-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"678\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This ad for IBM products features a middle aged Asian man, a type of person associated with high technology.<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/race-meaning-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-979 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/race-meaning-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"499\" height=\"636\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>NEW:<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/span>This ad uses an Asian man to invoke the idea of a good worker.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/09\/picture14.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-5\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3045  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/09\/picture14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"687\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">These two ads for Kool cigarettes (thanks to my student, Eugene, for the first one, and <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderingvisitor.blogspot.com\/2006\/12\/big-tobacco-and-your-child.html\" target=\"_blank\">this blog<\/a> for the second) use Black men doing stereotypically Black things (playing the trumpet and djing) in order to try to transfer some of the cool associated with Black men to Kool cigarettes.\u00a0 (Alternatively, these ads may be targeted directly at a Black audience.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/race-28.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-6\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-977 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/race-28.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"697\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-978 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/race-meaning-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This one too:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-983 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/race-27.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"712\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Finally, this ad for the <del datetime=\"00\">Ipod<\/del> ipod-type thing (submitted by my student, Cheng)\u00a0uses a young Asian man dancing.\u00a0 We all know that white men can&#8217;t dance.<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/race-meaning-41.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-7\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-984 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/race-meaning-41.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"723\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>NEW!<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span> In this ad, rhythm is represented by a black woman:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14037  aligncenter\" title=\"Rhythm\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/Rhythm-791x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Rhythm\" width=\"482\" height=\"679\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If anyone has more examples, I&#8217;d love to see them!<\/p>\n<p>Next up: <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/05\/24\/why-and-how-people-of-color-are-included-in-advertising-2nd-in-a-series\/\" target=\"_self\">using people of color to signify, literally, color, or even spice or flavor<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While whiteness is the neutral category (for example, see here and see here for the same phenomenon related to gender) and most, but not all, advertising is aimed at white people first, we all know that people of color DO appear in advertising, even when it&#8217;s obvious that the intended audience is mostly white.
